Public Scoping Underway for Bandelier Transportation Plan

Bandelier NP News:

The National Park Service has initiated the process to complete a Transportation Plan/Environmental Assessment to improve transportation conditions at Bandelier National Monument.

Over three decades, a number of studies and workshops have documented transportation and congestion management challenges at Bandelier National Monument, including traffic congestion at the park entrance and a lack of adequate parking in Frijoles Canyon.

Road Closure Sunday for 19th Annual Kids Triathlon

LOS ALAMOS RECREATION DIVISION News:

The Los Alamos Recreation Division will be holding the 19th annual Kids Triathlon Sunday, Aug. 19.

The following road closure will be in effect: Canyon Road will be closed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 15th Street to Central Avenue.

Canyon Road will reopen at 3 p.m. from 15th Street to Central Avenue.

Cruise the Caldera

Explore more than 60 miles of roads on the Valles Caldera National Preserve by Mountain Bike Saturday, Aug. 25.

This event will happen only once this season, and it is open for all ages and abilities.

Participants can ride from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at one of two entrances; Banco Bonito Staging area, mile marker 30 off N.M. 4 or the Valle Grande Staging Area mile marker 39.2 off N.M. 4.

Aquatomics Place 11 in Long Course Championship

AQUATOMICS News:

The Four Corners Aquatic Team and New Mexico Swimming hosted the New Mexico Long Course State Championships Swim Meet July 19-22, at the Farmington Aquatic Center in Farmington.

A total of 446 swimmers from 22 teams attended.

The Los Alamos Aquatomics had 23 swimmers attend the championship meet; several of whom scored points for the team by finishing in the top eight in their events:

The Valles Caldera deserves a trail around its rim. At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 in Fuller Lodge, Historian Dorothy Hoard will tell of her 12-year still unfinished odyssey to make the dream a reality.

The resurgent dome of the Valles Caldera is, geologically speaking, very young. Its structure is largely intact.

The Heron Lake Paddle Festival is set for Aug. 10, 11 and 12. Heron Lake State Park is 11 miles west of Tierra Amarilla via U.S. highways 64 and 84 and N.M. 95.

This three day event includes canoe and kayak clinics, demos and races among other activities such as a used gear sale.

The Paddle Festival site is in the Ridge Rock area of Heron Lake State Park – just west of the dam.

Leonard is Top Predictor in Weekly Pace Race

ATOMIC ROAD RUNNERS News:

Erik Leonard was the fastest for the 1-mile predict-your-time pace race in 8:14 and was only one second off his prediction.

A total of 41 people did the weekly Tuesday pace races, which were held on paved roads in Pajarito Acres under cloudy skies.

For the one mile course, the fastest female runner was Michelle Jones (9:39). The best female predictors were Inez Ross (10 s off her prediction), Darby Kellum and D J Kliesen (both 13 s). Zach Leonard did the 1 mile run in 8:16, and Morgan Jones did 10:47.

Fall KinderKick Soccer Registration Ends Aug. 17

FAMILY YMCA News:

Registration is open until Aug. 17 for the YMCA Fall KinderKick Soccer program for ages three to four and five to six.

The Season runs Aug. 27 to Oct. 4. Practice and games are twice a week for six weeks in White Rock and Los Alamos.
