Hikes, Talks & Walks on Tap at Bandelier

An opportunity for anyone looking for a day of challenging volunteer trail work is set for Sunday, June 24 at Bandelier National Monument.
 
Volunteers, along with the Bandelier trail crew, will hike about 1.5 miles out along the trail from the Visitor Center toward mid-Alamo Canyon to reset water bars and do other needed work.
 
Be sure to call ahead to the Visitor Center, 505-672-3861 x 517, to sign up. Volunteers must be at least 13, but no experience is needed.
 
Bring at least a gallon of water, as well as lunch, sunscreen, hat, and good boots.

Roy Cope makes perfect prediction on Tuesday’s pace race on North Mesa on the one mile course.

Runners had the choice to run either one mile or a true 5K, but either way their error was adjusted to a uniform error for a three mile course.

The next best prediction was made by Alexander Romero with a distance adjusted 21 second error.

11-year-old Jacob Thompson was fastest male on the one mile course with a time of 9:56. Fastest female was Ann Nichols with a time of 17:25.

As a recent Los Alamos resident returning to New Mexico after 17 years, the lab was a major business client of mine during the 1980s and 1990s.

Compared with those days, Los Alamos has come a long way.

LA Skateboard Competition Set for June 23

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division is hosting the LA Skateboard Competition at 11 a.m., Saturday June 23 at the Los Alamos Skate Park. 

The competition consists of Two 90-Second Runs in the Park and an Ollie Competition. 

Following the events will be a demonstration from the BZ Skate Team from Beyond Waves in Albuquerque.

Fees are $5 pre-registration and $8 on-site registration the day of the competition.

Coop Market Launched Inagural Bike Swap Sunday

The Los Alamos Cooperative Market hosted its inagural Bike Swap Sunday to provide the opportunity for bicycle enthusiasts to sell and buy quality used and new bicycles, parts and accessories.

The Los Alamos Singletrack Association (LASA), an International Mountain Biking Association affiliated club sponsored the event.

A portion of each sale (10 percent) went to LASA.

LASA President Scott Weiss said the proceeds will be used to work with Pajarito Ski Hill to build bike trails at Pajarito.

PEEC Offers Free Hike to Guaje Overlook

Today, June 10, Paul Arendt will lead a hike for PEEC to the Guaje Overlook. Hikers will meet at PEEC at 9 a.m. to carpool to the ski area for the hike of about 8 miles round-trip. 

Participants should bring a lunch and water, and dogs are welcome.

The Guaje Overlook hike goes through the beautiful Cañada Bonita area and beyond, offering views into the Valle De Los Posos, as well as pleasant, wooded trails.

Bandelier ‘Get Outdoors Day’ is Fee Free!

Saturday, June 9, will be the first celebration of “Get Outdoors Day,” meant to encourage healthy, active outdoors fun.

Also known as GO Day, it will be a fee free day in National Park areas nationwide.

At Bandelier National Monument, Superintendent Jason Lott will be sponsoring a family hike, meeting at 8 a.m. at the Burnt Mesa trailhead.

Along with Lott’s family, participants will hike out along the established trail and come back on an off-trail return route that is being considered to make the trail a loop.

Committee Favors Naming Trail After Satch Cowan

Los Alamos County held a public hearing Tuesday evening regarding a recent citizen petition to name or rename a trail in the Quemazon Trail Complex in the Western Area after deceased local resident and hiking enthusiast Helen “Satch” Cowan.
