Today, Palm Sunday, begins the holiest week of the Christian year. Traditionally churches celebrate with processions with palm branches and readings remembering Christ’s entry into Jerusalem.

Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the three holiest days. Maundy comes from the Latin word “mandatum” or commandment. The worship on this day recalls the Last Supper Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews: ‘The King Of Kings’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

Now showing at SALA, through Easter Sunday, April 20, is a wonderful, new animated film, “The King of Kings”. It tells the story of Jesus in a way both children and adults can appreciate.

The film is based on “The Life of Our Lord” the story that Charles Dickens wrote solely for his own children. It was his tradition to read it to his family at Christmas each year. Dickens, who died in 1870, insisted the story not be published during his lifetime and not until the family agreed to it. In fact, it was 1934 before the story was published, 64 years after Charles Dickens’ death Read More

Rabbi Shlachter: Passover Begins Saturday Evening April 12

By Rabbi Jack Shlachter
Los Alamos Jewish Center

The 8-day holiday of Passover is the most widely celebrated holiday on the Jewish calendar and traditionally requires a great deal of advance preparation. (My blood pressure is already rising as I recognize the rapid approach of the holiday). This year, Passover begins on Saturday evening, April 12. Passover commemorates the release of the Jewish people from slavery thousands of years ago, and many of us will have in our minds and hearts the remaining 59 hostages still held captive in Gaza following the Hamas atrocities of 18 months ago.

Fr. Glenn: Countin’ For Somethin’

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

I’ve been watching the old black and white episodes of “Gunsmoke” during relax time lately, and saw a rather poignant one recently (Ssn 9, Ep.26). A struggling farmer was feeling that he was getting “old” (a whole 43 … puh-leeaasssse!) and was depressed because he felt that he had been of no consequence in his life—barely making a living, no kids, and a shrewish wife declaring him a “failure”. A rather timid yet good fellow, he goes into Dodge City hoping to find some way to make his mark, and ends up publicly backing down to a bully in shame (in front of a woman who had been kind to him, Read More

Approaching another birthday ending in zero or five can make one feel old. A lot of history got us this far. For the eldest among us, we wonder what could possibly equal the joys in our past. And yet, through the lens of our faith (and as we know from experience), there are still good things to come.

Change, we have learned, is inevitable. We don’t always like the changes we see around Read More

Fr. Glenn: Not Exalting Self

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

There sure is a lot of screaming and vitriol these days. Accusations of fascism here, genocide there … every “-phobia” and “-ism” imaginable … and some never thought of before. Much of it, of course, is just political or protester hyperbole to manipulate others toward a their “side”, or even to just score cheap points without taking into account all the facts or the whole of often myriad various concerns and variables. But underlying so many of demonizations seem to be airs of superiority. But for a true evaluation of self, humility is an essential ingredient, for “Arrogance Read More
