Los Alamos Jewish Center News:

The Jewish cycle of reading the Five Books of Moses over the course of the year continues this week with a focus on the passage in Torah (the Jewish bible) known as Sh’lach Lecha,  Numbers 13:1-15:41.

The Los Alamos Jewish Center and congregation HaMakom in Santa Fe, led by Rabbi Jack Shlachter, will hold a Zoom-only discussion at noon Wednesday, June 14. Those gathered will be examining the mistake made by the scouts when they investigated the conditions in Israel following the Read More

Fr. Glenn: Law? What Law?

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

It’s always rather an adventure driving between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, especially on weekdays when commuter traffic is particularly heavy–cars flying past the poor slob who obeys the speed limit, often receiving for his lawfulness a one-fingered wave in thanks (“Oh, how awful; the fingers on each side of that middle one have been amputated! Poor fellow.”) And, of course, there are far too few resources for police to enforce speed limits strictly, so many go rocketing on their merry Doppler-shifting speeds fearlessly and virtually unhindered. (BTW, a favorite red bumper Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Big Three

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Many non-Christians (and even Christians who have not been well instructed) are often curious about many of the teachings of Christianity—terms, principals, theology, etc. Today (6/4/23), and every first Sunday after Pentecost, we Catholics celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity—this greatest and most difficult mystery of our faith to contemplate. And to call it a “mystery” does not mean that the answer does not exist, but rather that humanity cannot find the answer in fullness, but like a treasure hunt that never ends, are given only clues to its ultimate solution Read More

“Pessimism is an evolutionary dead end.” So proclaimed Dr. John F. Haught, invited speaker at the Los Alamos Faith and Science Forum. Dr. Haught was expanding last Wednesday on the writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, renowned Jesuit geologist and theologian. On Tuesday evening, Dr. Haught’s presentation had imagined Teilhard in conversation with Albert Einstein about Time and the Future; the two scientists Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Light Of Truth

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

A blessed (and safe!) Memorial Day weekend to all. Please remember reverently those for whom Memorial Day is dedicated—those who have given their lives in the service of our nation. As mentioned here last week, there are few better descriptions of the ideal of dedicated service men and women than in General Douglas MacArthur’s last speech to the cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. If you want to have more of an “immersion” experience of Memorial Day, listen to the general’s speech, watch the video of Chris Stapleton’s national anthem from this year’s Superbowl, Read More
