By Rabbi Jack Shlachter

Were one to compile a list of favorite college experiences, pulling an all-nighter would probably not emerge at the top! Yet the Jewish people incorporated just such an experience into our annual calendar as part of the observance of a holiday called Shavuot, literally weeks. The Jewish holiday of Passover, which was observed in April, celebrates the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery. According to the Torah or Five Books Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Goad

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

A blessed Armed Forces Day weekend to all past and present veterans out there; we thank you for your service to our nation and her people. I saw almost no note of it in the media, but that does not mean you are not very much appreciated. The military is highlighted in times of national trouble, but attention fades a bit during quieter times of relative peace—peace, which is always a blessing for a nation’s people. Yet this is the way of any vocation of service: at times out of sight and mind, yet always at the ready.

Knowing you are there—many on the ramparts daily—gives your fellow citizens Read More

Have you been struggling, maybe for years, to wrap your mind around how and why Americans have become so bitterly divided?

The social and political issues often seem to have such deep roots, but the disagreements regularly now go in confusing or alarming directions. More fire accelerants seem to appear some weeks than there are sensible firefighters.

Clarity is needed about what is under the surface and Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Merry Manic Month Of May

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Well, a happy Mothers’ Day to all of you moms out there. I hope that your children recognize all the love that you’ve given them, and realize that many go without such love all of their lives. So kids: be grateful to, and for, your moms! After all, they’re there to share both your joys and your sorrows, your hopes and dreams. Whoever coined the phrase: “A problem shared is a problem halved” must have been thinking about Mom.

Moms’ Day is always smack down around the middle of May, which tends to be one of the busiest months of the year. Lots of things going on that month in churches just after Read More

Fr. Glenn: ‘What IS Truth?’

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

“What is truth?” – one of the most famous and philosophical lines of the Christian Gospels, uttered musingly by the Roman governor of Judea Pontius Pilate in his dialogue with Jesus prior to Jesus’ condemnation and crucifixion. (John 18:38)

We find that the answer to this poignant, and yet essential, question becoming ever more fleeting and elusive in our day. Daily is news about the rise of artificial intelligence (“AI”) and its ever-increasing ability to mimic authors, poets, artists, etc., until reproductions and “works” are almost indistinguishable from the original Read More
