Fr. Glenn: Resolving Anew

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

As the new year comes upon us, our thoughts often wander toward self-improvement and new year’s resolutions. Should we lose that 5, 10, 15 pounds that we may have gained over the year (or over Christmas!)? Should we make more money? Should we hit the gym more frequently and regularly? When making resolutions in the new year, or at any time, it’s good to think about that which is truly good and truly lasting.

Especially when we’re younger adults (but certainly not exclusively) we tend toward self-glorification through displays of wealth, strength and physical beauty. In my admittedly Read More

My husband, the statistician, told me on the occasion of my 40th birthday, “It’s only because we live in a base 10 society that this is such a big deal.” While he might not have gained very many points with his wife who was then lamenting the passage of time, he was, of course, right.

Much of our thinking, reactions, and emotions are controlled by socially accepted norms and traditions, Read More

Merry Christmas … Think Twice When You Say It!

By LEAH LUCK
Los Alamos

“Merry Christmas” – What does it mean? A blessing, a wish to a neighbor or friend. A reminder of Baby Jesus, his birth, the One who came for all on earth.

Why do we say, “Merry Christmas,” the offer of Peace, Hope and Goodwill? To share the love Christ has given, a love we can’t understand.

This time of year we stretch out our hand to help, to share with our fellow man Those blessings He so abundantly gives to the ones for whom he died so we can live.

So, let us wish “Merry Christmas” to all we come across, without fear of rejection, persecution or loss. Our liberty is Read More

Fr. Glenn: Hero Worship

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Well, a very merry and blessed Christmas to you all and to your families—a joyful time to rest, to renew our relationships with family and friends. Few things are as heart-warming as the squeals of delight from your children and grandchildren on Christmas eve and morn as the little ones open their presents, or the anticipation for a dinner with many of their favorite food. Many of you grandparents will relate to the scripture which says: “Grandchildren are the crown of the aged…” (Proverbs 17:6), and “Lo, sons are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. / Like arrows Read More

Fr. Glenn: Responding To Grace

Fr. Glenn Jones:

One of the things we find frustrating is traffic—it always seems worse when you’re running late, or the traffics lights conspiring against you, or someone is piddling along in the fast lane. “Darn it!” … or words to that effect. But then … we go up a little farther and there’s an accident that occurred just a few moments before. And we find ourselves grateful for a little delay.

Or have you ever been the right person at just the right time, or had someone help you at just the right moment. Priests and ministers and social workers often have people say to them years later: “That which you Read More

All Shall Be Well: The Remedy For Racism

Over the past three months, I’ve participated in an intense class on racism in our country. It’s been demanding in terms of time, intellectual capacity, and perhaps most of all, heart capacity.

It’s painful to see more fully the historic and ongoing oppression that exists in our country, based solely on race. It’s uncomfortable to see the ingrained-ness of racism in our country. It’s overwhelming to see the pervasiveness Read More
