LANL Announces Scholarship Winners

LANL FOUNDATION News:

Thirteen Northern New Mexicans have received $1,000 Returning Student/Regional College scholarships from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Employees’ Scholarship Fund.

The awards help students returning to a formal education for certification or a two-year degree at an accredited regional college. Many are pursuing new careers.

Funding comes from donations by LANL employees and a matching amount from Los Alamos National Security, LLC., and the scholarships are administered by the LANL Foundation.

Potential for Severe T-Storms in North Central/Northwestern NM Today

This is a brief update from the National Weather Service in Albuquerque on the potential for severe weather over portions of north central and northwestern New Mexico today, Sunday, Sept. 22.

Impacts:

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to take shape this afternoon over northwestern and north central New Mexico, many of which will be strong to severe. These storms will be capable of producing severe hail (greater than 1″ diameter) and/or severe wind gusts (greater than/equal to 58 mph.)

Free Guided Trips to Southwest Jemez Mountains

SANTA FE – The Santa Fe National Forest will be hosting several free field trips for the public to learn about restoration efforts planned for the Southwest Jemez Mountains.

Oct. 11 and 12, three field trips will be scheduled each day. Choose from a full day or a half day trip. The group will travel to various locations in the forest and hear from the specialists who are engaged in managing this intricate and complex landscape.

Flooding Closes Areas of SFNF Through Dec. 30

SFNF News:

Recent heavy rainfall in the Pecos/Las Vegas area of the Santa Fe National Forest has required that certain roads and sites be closed for public safety. 

Several forest roads are impassible due to washouts, debris such as trees and branches along roadways, and plugged culverts. There are also a few bridges that were jammed up with debris and sustained damage. 

Forest personnel continue to assess the damage but are unable to reach some areas due to impassable roads. Clearing of debris has begun in some areas but this may take some time depending on the amount Read More

Prescribed Burns Planned on Santa Fe National Forest

SFNF News:

The Santa Fe National Forest is planning a prescribed fire on the Coyote Ranger District within the next seven days.

The Mesa Camino burn may start as early as tomorrow (Sunday.) If conditions don’t allow that burn to be successful, they may burn in the Gallina area instead. Planned benefits from these burns: reduce hazardous fuels, break up continuous fuels, prepare the land for new growth, help plants and trees to grow healthier, improve wildlife habitat.

Bandelier Again Collects Entrance Fees; Public Lands Day is Fee Free

Since the Frijoles Canyon section of Bandelier National Monument closed last weekend due to the effects of three flash floods in three days, park employees have been working hard to clean up the mud and damage.
