Letter To The Editor: About International Women’s Day At Ashley Pond Wednesday

By DOUG REILLY
Los Alamos

International Women’s Day is celebrated much more around the world than here in the USA. When I as working at the IAEA in Vienna, my closest colleague was Russian. I learned that at the Russian Embassy this was the biggest celebration of the year. The men dressed in their best suits and the women in their best dresses. There was a feast for everyone and, of course, many toasts.

Another thing I learned in Russia, Kazakhstan, and other countries in the FSU is that at any gathering THE THIRD TOAST IS TO THE WOMEN, even if no women are present.

It would be nice if the USA Read More

  • DNA Manipulation, Invasive/Non-invasive Techniques, Distribution, and How Far Do We Go?

Medicine is a broad category applicable to humans and animals inhabiting Earth. In most cases it deals with sustaining life as we know it and has an inherent hierarchy that has humans at the top. Accordingly, this list item is primarily concerned with medicine for humanity, noting that animals have a major role in the human existence.

Heading south from the border towns of El Paso/Ciudad Juarez, the comfortable Mexican bus navigates the eight-hour ride to the City of Chihuahua. Although I did not see any of the little dogs, which are named after the city, I did have a wonderful time exploring the sights and museums and food.

Casa Chihuahua

One of my first stops was Casa Chihuahua, the former Federal Palace and now a museum. It is located at the head of Libertad, a street that has been turned

World Futures: What Do We Need? STUFF – Infinite Recycling

By ANDY ANDREWS
Los Alamos World Futures Institute

In our world today there is much concern about recycling of materials that have been assembled with energy to create something for use by humanity.

Referring to the Plass table shown in column 2, note that decay and respiration add CO2 to the atmosphere. It can be argued that this is essentially the recycling of organic, carbon-based materials readying them for reconstruction via photosynthesis. Essentially solar recycling of formerly living materials – it is organic.

But what about non-organic materials? In gross terms there are Read More

Professor Emerita Denise Fort: How Can U.S. Retain Scientific Leadership In Environmental Protection?

By DENISE D. FORT
Professor Emerita UNM School of Law
Former director, NM Environmental Improvement Division

The upheaval in Washington, D.C. that is occurring now has one surprising objective – the discrediting of scientists. Science is under attack in numerous ways.

The assertion that climate change is a Chinese hoax was bad enough. Now the Administration has nominated a climate denier to head the EPA, taken down web pages that inform the public about agency work, and threatened to slash funding at EPA.

The threat comes from the Congress
