Tiny Gosling Makes Debut At Ashley Pond

A tiny gosling was spotted Friday at Ashley Pond. Mama goose with her pal Ed laid approximately 11 eggs in early May. When she noticed four of the eggs had been eaten by some predator, a dog igloo was erected around the nest and when bits of lettuce were spotted near the shelter, a small construction fence was installed. These precautions were taken, Phelan explained, because there is a concern if the female doesn’t feel safe, she will abandon the nest. The measures Read More

Daily Postcard: Bear Peeks Around Tree Trunk At Bandelier

Daily Postcard: A black bear peeks around a tree trunk Sunday at Bandelier National Monument. Black bears aren’t often seen in Bandelier. However, there’s likely a larger population living in the lush canyons and higher elevations than sightings would indicate. Occasionally, a bear(s) finds its way into the most visited area of the park. When that happens, it’s important that the bear(s) remain wild and not become used to people and human food. Why? Bears learn quickly and will return to areas where they find food. Not only can this be dangerous for people, but it is also harmful to bears. Storing Read More
