The Taos County Historical Society (TCHS) presents a free, public program “Place Names of New Mexico” by author Robert Julyan at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 in the Kit Carson Electric Cooperative Boardroom at 118 Cruz Alta Road in Taos.

This program is sponsored by the New Mexico Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Challah Rising in the Desert: The Jews of New Mexico celebrates the history and people of New Mexico’s unique Jewish community. A special screening of this feature documentary will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Reel Deal Theater. 

The screening is sponsored by the Los Alamos Chapter of Hadassah. The movie is free to attend, but donations for medical research at Hadassah Hospital in Israel are welcome. Refreshments will be served after the film.

LA Piecemakers Presents Quilt Artist Melody Crust

The Los Alamos Piecemakers Quilt Guild invites the public to a free lecture by well-known quilt artist Melody Crust. If people have attended the Houston Quilt Show they have no doubt heard Crust share her humorous stories of how she recovered from quilt disasters and made “silk purses” out of “sows ears”.

She will present the free lecture “So Many Ideas, So Little Time” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the White Rock Presbyterian Church at 310 Rover Blvd. This is the monthly Guild meeting and a short business meeting will precede the program.

Snowflake Theme For Festival Of Trees Event

Snowflakes are the theme for the community tree at this year’s annual Festival of Trees event.

Community members are asked to donate one snow related item to demonstrate what can happen when we all come together. A donation box will be available at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

Daily Postcard: A sun dog is spotted in the sky Wednesday evening above Los Alamos. According to skyandtelescope.com, a sundog, or mock Sun, is a concentrated patch of sunlight occasionally seen about 22° to the left or right of the Sun. Sundogs often form when sunlight refracts through icy clouds containing hexagonal platecrystals aligned with their large, flat faces parallel to the ground. Technically known as parhelia (singular parhelion) they are often white but sometimes quite colorful, looking like detached pieces of rainbow, with red on the inside, toward the Sun, and blue on the outside.
