Alaska Glaciers Contribute To Global Sea Level Rise

WASHINGTON, D.C.  Alaska’s melting glaciers are adding enough water to the Earth’s oceans to cover the state of Alaska with a 1-foot thick layer of water every seven years, a new study shows.
 
The study found that climate-related melting is the primary control on mountain glacier loss. Glacier loss from Alaska is unlikely to slow down, and this will be a major driver of global sea level change in the coming decades, according to the study’s authors.

Triatomics Splash n’ Dash Starts Wednesday June 24

SPORTS News:
 
Splash n’ Dash begins Wednesday, June 24. This year there is a long course (400M swim and 5K run), and a short course (200M swim and 3K run). Teams and floatation devices are permitted in both. 
Registration for each event opens at 6:20 p.m. at the back of the Aquatic Center. Instructions at 6:50 p.m. and the first swimmer pushes off at 7 p.m.

WIPP Update: Breidenbach Officially Takes Over As NWP President & Project Manager

On June 11, Phil Breidenbach officially assumed the role of NWP President & Project Manager, replacing Bob McQuinn. McQuinn served in that capacity for just over a year.
 
Breidenbach, who brings over 30 years of experience working at various Department of Energy facilities, served a key role in the development of the WIPP Recovery Plan following the radiological event. His past experience includes operations and project management at various nuclear facilities, including several that involved some type of recovery operations.

At its June meeting, the volunteer Executive Committee of the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter unanimously voted to elect former Santa Fe Mayor David Coss to succeed John Buchser as chapter chair.
 
Buchser is stepping down as chair to focus on water issues for the chapter.

Over the past three fiscal years, reductions in revenues associated with reduced federal spending at Los Alamos National Laboratory have made balancing the budget at Los Alamos County without a reduction in service very challenging.
