Udall, Heinrich Introduce Bill To Preserve And Expand Native American Languages

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced Thursday that they have introduced a bill to preserve endangered Native languages.
 
The Native Language Immersion Student Achievement Act creates a new grant initiative to establish or expand Native language immersion programs. The grants will support the revitalization and maintenance of Tribal languages while increasing educational opportunities for Native American students.

CORVALLIS, Ore.  Oregon State University will hold its 146th commencement Saturday, June 13, in Reser Stadium.
 
Los Alamos students graduating from OSU include:
 
  • Julia A. Kautz, Master of Science, Civil Engineering; and
  • Ashley D. Reid, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Medicine – DVM.
 
OSU is one of the few large universities in the nation to hand out students’ actual diplomas during the commencement ceremony.

The Los Alamos County Council has declared today as Poppy Day in Los Alamos. The story of how the poppy originated as the symbol to honor service men and women dates back to 1918.

The weekly Pace Race was very competitive Tuesday night on the Canada del Buey trail in White Rock.
 
Jayson Jones was the best predictor on the one mile course with an adjusted error of 3.15 seconds. Second was Tamryn Jones with a prediction adjusted error of 4.26 seconds followed by Jackie Peckham with an adjusted error of 5.7 seconds.

Letter To The Editor: ‘Did Mr. Antos Read My Entire Letter?’

Apparently, Mr. Antos did not bother to read my entire letter, but went off on a tangent after seeing the words “greenhouse effect of CO2 generated by massive levels of coal and petroleum combustion to produce electricity makes common scientific sense”.

He did not bother to note my very next sentence, which stated, “It is the magnitude of the effect of such pollutions on a global scale and the non-human effects that are the issues.”

I spent the rest of the letter addressing changes in the global temperature of “mother earth”

DOE Announces 23 New Projects

WASHINGTON The Energy Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has announced $60 million in funding for 23 groundbreaking new projects aimed at creating highly efficient and scalable dry-cooling technologies for thermoelectric power plants and developing prototype technologies to explore new pathways for fusion power.
 
The projects are funded through ARPA-E’s two newest programs, Advanced Research In Dry cooling (ARID) and Accelerating Low-cost Plasma Heating and Assembly (ALPHA), which both seek to develop low-cost technology

Albuquerque Film and Music Experience presents: “Tension – 25 Years Underground”, a documentary on the power/thrash metal band Tension, which will be played from 7-9 p.m., Friday June 5, at South Broadway Cultural Center, 1025 Broadway Blvd SE in Albuquerque.
