White Rock Visitor Center Opens Sept. 28

The new White Rock Visitor Center Complex at 115 N.M. 4 is scheduled to open its doors during a grand opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28.

 

The 3,281 square foot Visitor Center, located along New Mexico Highway 4 (N.M. 4), the gateway to Bandelier National Monument, will serve as a tourist center and local transit hub to and from Bandelier and the Los Alamos townsite.

Fifth Street between Myrtle and Canyon is closed.  Work continues on Myrtle between 9th Street and 15th Street. This section of Myrtle is closed to through traffic with flagging operations during the day and two-way traffic at night.

Workshop Focuses on New Mexico Trees and Shrubs

A very special opportunity to work with Jack Carter in the classroom and field

The public is invited to attend a workshop conducted by Jack Carter on New Mexico trees and shrubs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 22.
 
Only 15 spaces remain open for the workshop to be held at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center, 3540 Orange St.
 
First, participants will key plants together in a classroom setting to get some real practice using the book.
 
Carter’s aim is to have participants become comfortable and confident in plant identification.

Pet of the Week is Seren

FRIENDS OF THE SHELTER News:

This week’s featured pet at the Los Alamos Friends of the Shelter is Seren, a large, two-year-old female Shepherd mix that has been spayed.

She does well with other dogs, enjoys the dog park and enjoys human interaction and is emerging as a sweet dog.

The Los Alamos Cooperative Market is hosting its second Health and Wellness Fair 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Co-op, 95 Entrada Dr., next to the Holiday Inn Express.

The Health and Wellness Fair includes massage therapists, naturopaths, chiropractors, acupuncturists, physical therapists, mental balance coaches, Krav Maga & Z-Health instructors, local artists and other wellness vendors.

The Family YMCA is taking registrations for the Fall Adult Volleyball League.
 
Games will be 1-4 p.m. Sundays Oct. 7 through Nov. 18 at the YMCA, 1450 Iris St.
 
This is a casual 4 on 4 co-ed league for ages 16 and older. Price per player is $20 or $15 for Y members.

Candia Best Predictor in Weekly Pace Race

ATOMIC ROAD RUNNERS News:

A cool evening greeted the 27 runners and walkers who participated in Tuesday’s one mile and three mile pace race courses, which had everyone climb up through the Quemazon subdivision.

The one milers looped back around to the bottom of Quemazon Road while the three milers headed onto the Perimeter Trail for a while and then headed down Pipeline Road back to the bottom of Quemazon Road.

All finishers were treated to watermelon for their efforts.
