Local Glass Recycling Returns Sept. 29

LOS ALAMOS COUNTY News:

Starting Sept. 29, residents will once again be able to recycle glass in Los Alamos County through the new drop-off program. 

Yellow dumpsters will be placed at the two recycling convenience centers; Sullivan field across from Los Alamos High School and Overlook Park in White Rock for the collection of glass bottles and jars of all colors. 

Glass bottles and jars will also be accepted at the Los Alamos County Eco Station. 

In order to ensure a successful program, please adhere to these glass recycling requirements:

Pavement Preservation – Fog Sealing Continues in Quemazon and Western Area

Fog sealing operations will continue in Quemazon on Monday finishing with fog sealing the full length of Quemazon Road. Crews will then move to Western Area: Ridgeway, 47th Street – Trinity to Ridgeway, 49th, and the upper Trinity/Sandia loop.

‘Lunch with a Leader’ to Feature Nagawiecki and West

The League of Women Voters will host its monthly Lunch with a Leader at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 in the third-floor conference room at Mesa Public Library.  
 
The speakers are Tom Nagawiecki, Los Alamos Environmental Services Specialist and Sandra West, Outreach Coordinator at the Los Alamos Co-op.

Atomic City Children’s Theater Holds Auditions

ATOMIC CITY CHILDREN’S THEATER News:

Atomic City Children’s Theater (ACCT), the Los Alamos Public Schools’ after-school theater program, is holding auditions for its Elementary School Production of Disney The Little Mermaid, Jr., a two-act musical play based on the hit Broadway musical and full-length movie of the same name.

Auditions will be 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12.in the Barranca Mesa Elementary School gymnasium. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. and the auditions are open to 5th or 6th grade students in the Los Alamos area.

Moonshadow is Friends of the Shelter ‘Pet of the Week’

FRIENDS OF THE SHELTER News:

Moonshadow is a friendly, playful older kitten. He and a group of his friends came into the shelter and their family never came back to get them.  

They all get along well in the communal cat room at the shelter.  

Moonshadow has his first kitten shots, is neutered and ready for his new family.

PEEC Offers Second Hike in Fire Recovery Series

Chick Keller will lead a “Frijoles Canyon Devastation and Recovery Interpretive Hike” Sunday, Sept. 16. The hike is free and open to the public, with no registration required. 

Participants should meet at 8 a.m. at Ponderosa Campground, near the intersection of N.M. 501 and N.M. 4.

Comment Dates on Plans to Expand Disposal at WIPP

There are two opportunities to make public comment on the Department of Energy (DOE) proposals to expand the disposal options at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).

DOE is seeking to use lead shielded containers for disposal of “hot” Remote-Handled (RH) waste and to dispose of six metric tons of “surplus plutonium.”
