Transit of Venus Viewing Options for Tuesday

From 4 to sunset, Tuesday June 5, Los Alamos will be treated to a rare “transit of Venus” when the planet comes so precisely between the sun and the earth that its image can be seen crossing the solar disk.

Venus is small enough that a telescope (equipped with a special filter to reduce brightness) will be needed. 

PEEC has such a telescope and will be showing the transit to anyone interested.

A transit of Venus happens only four times every 243 years. However,, the spacing between each occurrence is very uneven.

Las Conchas Fire Order Closures To Be Lifted

The Forest Supervisor will sign the revised Las Conchas Fire order sometime on Monday, June 4th. For those of us in Los Alamos this means that the closure will be entirely lifted for Los Alamos County. For the Jemez District, it will be entirely lifted for non motorized travel. Canyon Rd between East Road (NM502) and the Myrtle Green continues to be closed to through traffic. Residential access to this area will be maintained; however, residents who park on Canyon Road are asked to park off-street or on a nearby side street. On Tuesday, June 5th, PEEC’s Summer Family Evenings program will kick off with a Taxidermy Museum with animals from Yukon Wildlife Studio.  Visitors are welcome to drop in any time between 6:30 and 8:30.  The event is free for PEEC members, and just $5 per family for non-members at the door.

Sidewalk Obstruction Removal Program

Los Alamos County would like to solicit the cooperation of property owners to voluntarily remove vegetation along sidewalks. Invasive weeds will be a problem this summer, so the county asks everyone to pull, spray, or otherwise control weeds and grass on their property and adjacent to sidewalks.

Early Voting Officially Ends as Final Ballot is Cast

Christopher Montoya casts the final ballot at 5:59 p.m. Saturday at Fire Station 3 in White Rock officially closing the chapter on the Early Voting election cycle for 2012. Montoya, 20, is a Los Alamos High School graduate, too young to vote in the last election. “It was exciting to be able to vote but I was a little worried because it was so close to 6 p.m.,” he said.
