By MELISSA BARTLETT
Los Alamos
The current Los Alamos County Parks and Recreation policy for access to the lower part of Bayo and Pueblo canyons is too restrictive and discriminates against those of us who have limited abilities.
Currently, parking is allowed only in the small dirt lot near the gate on the road that leads to the waste water treatment plant. Private vehicles that park anywhere past the gate are subject to ticketing.
This means that to access the many lovely trails of lower Pueblo and Bayo Canyons, the only option is a hike on the paved road and risk the trucks or on a small hot dusty trail Read More

This handsome eagle, native to North America, was selected as the national emblem of our new nation in 1782. However, despite being a national symbol, the bald eagle declined between 1782 and 1940. Eagles came to be viewed as killers of livestock; therefore, ‘varmints’ were to be eliminated.
In the early 20th Century, a bounty was set for bald eagles, paying 50 cents for each pair of feet; this reward was Read More
County Shares Information On Living With Wildlife
Beavers modify their environment to create habitats for food, shelter, and protection. Using rocks, mud, logs, and sticks, they dam shallow streams and form ponds in which they construct lodges.
Dams may reach heights of six feet or more and extend over large areas to form complex networks. Beaver dams increase total water surface area, stabilize stream flows, prevent erosion, and raise the level of water tables. As ponds behind beaver dams fill, new nesting, feeding, and winter habitats for trout, cavity-nesting birds, migratory birds, and other mammals are created. Water Read More
