Williams: The County Should Shop Local
By SEAN WILLIAMS
Democratic Candidate
Los Alamos County Council
One of the most common complaints I’ve heard from local business owners is, the amount of business they’ve done with the county has drastically fallen off over the last decade.
We’ve also had (well-deserved) controversies about replacing local service providers with outside contractors, thereby betraying the locals who established the service in the first place.
County code contains a “preference” for shopping local, but what this actually means is that procurement staff can consider a local bid to be 5 percent lower than Read More

Chart 201: COVID-19 In New Mexico Oct. 1
New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) has set two health requirements for public schools to be allowed to transition to hybrid instruction. The respective county must meet two gating criteria: (1) seven-day average for daily diagnoses below 8 per 100,000 people, and (2) testing positivity rate below 5 percent. As of today, nine New Mexico counties do not meet these gating criteria. Note however, that NMPED updates the list of counties approved for hybrid learning only periodically, and certainly not on a day by day basis. Source: New Mexico Department of Health. The UnQuarked business is a wine bar and restaurant that has operated in Los Alamos for a number of years. Last year they attempted to move to a new site on Central Avenue. Almost a year ago the county government stopped work on the site by red tagging their remodeling efforts. The owner states that he intends to file suit against the county. Some of the options are water bath and pressure canning, dehydration, and freezing. Which option is chosen depends on space, Read More
