Who’s your favorite woman scientist? Is it Grace Hopper, or Ada Lovelace, or maybe you call her Mom? At the Los Alamos County Libraries, we’re celebrating Ada Lovelace Day with a week of programs for kids and adults, Oct. 12 through 16, and we’re going to name a public computer after your favorite woman scientist.

“A library patron brought to our attention that not one of our computers was named after a female scientist,” Reference Librarian Liza Rivera said.

The Los Alamos Police Department collected 312 pounds of unwanted and unused prescriptions during Saturday’s drug take back day.

The total collection amount was from drop offs made to the LAPD drug box located in the police station lobby at the Judicial Complex and the two collection sites in Los Alamos and White Rock.

Home Renewal Program Launches In January 2016

The Los Alamos Housing Partnership (LAHP), in conjunction with Los Alamos County, will begin accepting applications for its Home Renewal Program (HRP) in January 2016. The program enables income-qualified homeowners to improve their homes to increase comfort, safety, and livability without adding to monthly expenses.

Police Seek Public’s Assistance To Locate Suspect In Friday’s Theft At Los Alamos Historical Museum

The Los Alamos Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for the person believed to be responsible for Friday’s incident at the Los Alamos Historical Museum. 

William Ryan Skelton, 30, is wanted on charges of larceny and criminal damage to property near Bathtub Row in Los Alamos.

The suspect was last seen driving a blue 1994 single cab Toyota truck with New Mexico plate NGM286.

Police are asking citizens to call Crimestoppers at 505.662.8282 with information on this case or to report the whereabouts of Skelton.

Atomic City Transit Bus And Pickup Collide On NM 4

An Atomic City Transit (ACT) “Dial a Ride” bus was involved in an accident at about 6:40 a.m. today on N.M. 4 near White Rock. The bus was carrying two passengers and no injuries were reported, however the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was transported to Los Alamos Medical Center with unknown injuries. A County spokesperson said that the ACT bus driver took evasive action to avoid a near head on collision with the pickup. The shoulder was soft and the bus rolled onto its side. The Los Alamos Fire Department, with the assistance of the Santa Fe National Forest, is conducting a prescribed burn on 26 acres of County open space.  The area is in the upper reaches of Pueblo Canyon east of the Aquatic Center.

Prescribed fires are one of the most effective tools available to resource managers for restoring fire-dependent ecosystems. These fires mimic natural fires by reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients and increasing wildlife habitat diversity.

Roadway construction continues on Sherwood Boulevard in White Rock. Motorists are traveling on new paved asphalt as demolition continues on the east side and construction is completed on the west side. Starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is bringing out the telescopes to observea lunar eclipse from the Los Alamos Nature Center. 

From the nature center, the moon will appear full as Earth passes between the sun and the moon. During the eclipse, the moon will take on a red glow from light traveling through the edges of the Earth’s atmosphere. It is termed a “supermoon” eclipse, because the moon is closer to Earth on the 27th and 28th of this month than any other time of the year.

Los Alamos County Community and Economic Development Department Director Anne Laurent has accepted a position in Park City, Utah.

“My last day (with the County) is two weeks from today,” Laurent told the Los Alamos Daily Post this morning. “I’m sad but at the same time excited.”

She will conduct similar work in her role as Community Development Director in Park City. Laurent explained that her husband Steve has friends in Park City and when the position came open, it was a great opportunity for them both.

Trinity Westbound Lane Closed Sept. 24-25

COUNTY News:

Crews from Star Paving Construction will be paving 20th Street and the westbound right lane of Trinity Drive will be closed from 17th Street to 20th Street beginning 7 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 through 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.

Pedestrians may experience a sidewalk closure and detour. All work should be completed by Friday, Sept. 25, weather permitting.
