Sewer Line Replacement Underway On Rim Road
COUNTY News:
Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities’ contractor began work last week to replace a sewer line at the far east end of Rim Road.
The existing steel sewer line is visible at the mesa’s edge and drops down into Pueblo Canyon. Crews will remove this line and install a new line underground that will extend to a manhole at Graduation Canyon.
Work is primarily located at the project footprint at the top of the mesa at the end of Rim Road and the bottom of Graduation Canyon where the directional drilling will take place. At times work may occur on adjacent county land at East Park Read More

Cat Found Roaming On 45th Street

This cat was brought to the Los Alamos County Animal Shelter Saturday, July 25.
The cat has been roaming on 45th Street and a concerned citizen brought it to the shelter. Someone must be missing the cat, as it seems well groomed and loved.

Final Week Of Summer Reading Challenge

On June 20, the Los Alamos School Board announced additional student incentives to help address the “summer slide” in reading skills.
This is the final week for participation.
The idea began at an Aspen Elementary School kickoff when Gov. Susana Martinez announced a statewide reading challenge encouraging students to read more books over the summer break.
Reading is the foundation for learning and when students read well, they are better positioned to succeed academically, in the workplace, and in life.

Raja is an 8-year-old red shepherd/lab cross, neutered, friendly, leash-trained, house-trained and who craves human company.
He is great with adults and gentle children, but is reported to be afraid of boys aged 8 to 18 years and afraid of sticks. He has been good with the other shelter dogs. On a recent trial visit to our cat room, he barked at a cat, so we’re not sure about his cat manners.

Los Alamos Probation Officer: Tough but Caring
Los Alamos Probation Officer Linda PeñaLinda Peña, the adult probation officer for Los Alamos County Municipal Court and Magistrate Court, says she’s “safe, blunt, and I don’t sugar coat” the situation with offenders.
However, it was obvious July 14, as she spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos, that she cares deeply about her work.

Water Main Break Closes Rover Near Longview
At around 10 a.m. today the Los Alamos Fire Department was conducting a pressure test at a fire hydrant near the corner of Rover and Longview in White Rock. County employees at the scene said the fire department closed the valve too quickly causing a water hammer effect resulting in a broken main. Los Alamos County recently entered into a contract with IMS Infrastructure Management Services to perform Pavement and Asset Management Services for County roadways.
In late June, IMS completed the first phase of pavement data collection using a van mounted device known as a Laser Road Surface Tester.

Purging Natural Gas On East Jemez Road Thursday
COUNTY News:
New Mexico Gas Company (NMGC) has informed the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities that it will purge a natural gas line 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, weather permitting, on East Jemez Road near Los Alamos County’s Eco Station.
NMGC is purging the line on East Jemez Road so crews can perform maintenance work at its natural gas border station on East Road across from Camino Entrada in Los Alamos.
“Purging” is the act of releasing natural gas from an existing section of pipeline so that work can be done safely under Federal Regulatory requirements.
