As a part of their Humanities Final Project Los Alamos High School students Jeremy Goette, Tristan Goodwin and Jonathan Osden are exploring ways to improve the general state of the trail system as well as make certain trails more accessible for commuters and Read More

Ed Birnbaum: Why I’m Running For County Council

By ED BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

I’m Ed Birnbaum, and I am running as a Democrat for a seat on County Council with a primary focus on the fire threat that exists, quality education at all levels, community viability within our budget, and making sure that decisions are made in a transparent manner.

I decided to run based in part on my experience last year as a member of the Los Alamos Utilities Charter Review Committee, where we were asked to address some important questions regarding Article V of the County Charter. Although many strongly-held opinions were expressed over the course of our many meetings, Read More

Frequent or Incessant Dog Barking Creates Nuisance

COUNTY News:

During the summer months, residents like to spend more time in their back yards, as well as wanting to enjoy the cool breeze during the evening hours by having windows open to their homes.

Because of these lifestyle changes during warmer weather months, subsequently, Animal Control officers typically receive more calls about barking dogs than they do at any other time of the year. Several residents ask officers each summer about enforcement or citations when it involves barking dogs.

The Animal Control division is part of the Los Alamos Police Department. It is their responsibility Read More

Letter to the Editor: ‘Live Exponentially’ … I’m Struggling to See a Connection

By PHILLIP NOLL
White Rock

“Live Exponentially.” What does that even mean? Of or relating to an exponent? Expressible by an exponential function? Characterized by an extremely rapid increase or decrease? (As in an exponential growth/decay rate?) How does any of this relate to Los Alamos? Is it just that “Exponentially” sounds scientific? I’m struggling to see a connection.

When I think about “living exponentially” various things come to mind (some good, most not so much):
  • The Spread of a Virus
  • Urban Sprawl
  • Computing Power
  • Greed
  • Overpopulation

Letter to the Editor: ‘Exponentially’ Wasting Money

By E. ALAN WADLINGER

Live Exponentially!!! Let’s apply this to increasing the number of “roundabouts” we have in our fair city.

I am sure that there are other things that we can do to exponentially waste money. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Let’s Find the Words that Best Tell People What We Are

By PETE SHEEHEY
Los Alamos County Councilor

Is Los Alamos a playful community? In my 28 years here, I’ve seen we are. Not just in the participation in outdoor and indoor recreation of all kinds by people of all ages, nor in the huge volunteer support of programs from PEEC to robotics competitions to youth and teen activities, but in the very science and engineering that is practiced at the Lab.

Most of those R&D 100 awards for significant scientific inventions that Lab researchers earn every year come from workers taking extra time to apply the methods and ideas used for the Lab’s Read More

Letter to the Editor: A Little Mystified as to What ‘Living Exponentially’ Will Mean to Anyone

By KHALIL J. SPENCER
Los Alamos

Even after reading the Los Alamos Daily Post article about our new brand, I am a little mystified as to what “Living Exponentially” will mean to anyone, either the scientifically inclined, insider, outsider, or otherwise. This seems yet another attempt to, as Richard Hanneman has often said, be something that Los Alamos is not rather than something we are.

I suspect more than enough really bright people up on the Hill could have done better had we left this idea of branding to ourselves.

Assuming for the moment we have to brand ourselves like some western herd Read More

Letter to the Editor: Nothing Screams Fun More Than Advanced Mathematics

By BRIAN JAMES
Taos

Exponential functions look somewhat similar to functions you have seen before, in that they involve exponents, but there is a big difference, in that the variable is now the power, rather than the base. Previously, you have dealt with such functions as f(x) = x2, where the variable x was the base and the number 2 was the power. In the case of exponentials, however, you will be dealing with functions such as g(x) = 2x, where the base is the fixed number, and the power is the variable.

Nothing screams fun more than advanced

Letter to the Editor: Seriously … ‘Live Exponentially’?

By CHRISTINE WEAVER
Los Alamos

James Rickman said it eloquently. I’ll simply say:

Seriously … “Live Exponentially”?

If that slogan on a sign coming into town wouldn’t make us sound arrogant, I don’t know what would.

I guess for $55,000 we paid for the arrogance, and got caught up in a whole bunch of silly. Every single county council member who voted for that ridiculous slogan should be made to pay back the county coffers, and then should be taken out of the running for the next election.

County PSA: Living with Large Predators

File photo

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County officials would like to remind the public that springtime typically brings with it an increase of large predators roaming throughout the forests and traveling on the trails surrounding the area – and that means some of these animals will likely enter the community’s residential areas, too.

They are seeking food or water, especially during times of drought. In our area, large predators can include mountain lions, black bears, bobcats and coyotes. Please review the following guidelines from New Mexico Game & Fish related to areas where you may encounter Read More
