Los Alamos County is holding a pruning workshop at 10 a.m., April 19 in the Memorial Rose Garden near Fuller Lodge.
County Extension Agent Carlos Valdez will lead the workshop.
Everyone is invited to attend and there is no charge for the event. Bring along pruning clippers and gloves, if available.

The Los Alamos County Council will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Nature Center at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 at the project site, 2600 Canyon Road, north of the Aquatic Center.
The public is invited to attend this event, which will be jointly hosted with the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC). PEEC has been selected as the contractor who will operate the Nature Center and provide programs to the public.

Final exterior finishes are being installed on the retail shops around the perimeter of the Smith’s Marketplace site. Concrete is being poured on the interior and framing is underway for the interior and exterior at the Smith’s Marketplace Store.

Morning Power Outage Affects Meadow Lane/Todd Loop Area
COUNTY News:
An underground line failure caused a power outage at 2:14 a.m., today in the Meadow Lane/Todd Loop area in White Rock, affecting approximately 75 Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities customers.
Power was restored by 5 a.m. to the majority of those customers and by 6:40 a.m. to all affected customers.

Kiki is a young, dark gray (blue) pit mix, medium-sized female dog estimated to be about 1.5 years old. She is a lovely, sweet dog that is somewhat intimidated by the shelter environment and may take a little time to relax around visitors.
If approached gently and slowly, she warms right up to people and loves to be petted. She is calm and caring, good with other dogs and cats, and is available for immediate adoption.

Utilities Board Taps Tim Glasco to Lead Los Alamos DPU

Board of Public Utilities Vice Chair Chris Ortega announced today that the Board selected Tim Glasco to lead the Department of Public Utilities, as Utilities Manager.
The Board’s selection will go to Los Alamos County Council April 29 for approval. If approved, Glasco will replace Utilities Manager John Arrowsmith who plans to retire from the Department in July.
Approximately 25 applications from around the country were received for the Utilities Manager position. Applications were screened by the Board, the Council Liaison and County Administrator Harry Burgess. Read More

Los Alamos Police Issue Fraud Alert
POLICE Alert:
It has come to the attention of the Los Alamos County Police Department that a male using various names is posing as a police officer of Los Alamos County, Santa Fe County and other police agencies. The male is calling residences, usually home phones, using different stories coercing the people he is calling into transferring money to him over the phone or computer.
The common false stories he is using include:
- “You have missed court or mandatory jury duty and now have a warrant for your arrest.”

Los Alamos County is hosting two public information meetings Wednesday, April 16 to reveal conceptual floor plans, exterior renderings and site plans for the new Los Alamos Teen Center:
3-5 p.m. for teens – at the current Teen Center in the lower level of the Trinity On the Hill Episcopal Church; and
5:30-7 p.m. for resident – at the Community Building, 20th and Central Avenue (future Teen Center site) to update residents on the design of the new Los Alamos Teen Center.

Reminder: Deadline Approaching For ED Board Vacancies

The deadline is quickly approaching for those interested in volunteering time to represent Los Alamos County on one of two economic development boards that have openings on their Board of Directors.
Both the Regional Development Corporation (RDC) and the North Central New Mexico Economic Development District (NMNMEDD) have vacancies and have asked the County Council to forward recommendations to them.

Los Alamos County is developing a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) Update to their 2006 plan. The purpose of this LHMP Update is to assess risk to natural hazards, implement actions to reduce future losses, and maintain eligibility for federal mitigation funds in accordance with the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000.
