The Pajarito Astronomers Club will host a “Dark Night” 7:30-11:59 p.m. Saturday, March 29 at Overlook Park in White Rock.
The Pajarito Astronomers Club hosts County-sponsored Dark Night observing sessions through November. These sessions are open to the public and occur once a month (on a Saturday evening near a new moon) when Los Alamos County turns off all the athletic field lights at the park.

Spring is here and black bears of the Pajarito Plateau are waking up from long winter naps. Bears eat almost anything available (i.e. insects, nuts and berries, plant matter, fish, birds, small mammals and carrion), but rarely kill larger prey.
Bears that have found available human sources, such as trash cans, gardens and fruit trees, are more likely to seek them again.
Tips and tricks to minimize encounters as bears begin to look for food:

The Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD), in collaboration with multiple agencies, will be conducting specialized, scenario-based training focused on responding to a drowning victim at the Los Alamos County Aquatic Center.
This critical training exercise will take place March 24-29 and will involve LAFD personnel, Los Alamos County (LAC) Dispatchers, lifeguards and emergency room physicians from Los Alamos Medical Center (LAMC).

Curbside Brush Collection Resumes March 24, Additional Services Provided Due To Wildfire Concerns

Beginning the week of Monday, March 24, Los Alamos County Environmental Services will resume residential curbside brush cart collection (brown bins).
In response to elevated wildfire concerns, additional brush collection services are temporarily being offered from March 24 through May 9, 2025. These additional services are as follows:

Collaboration Will Improve Regional Fire Protection

A long-awaited project to get a water pipeline up to Pajarito Mountain is finally taking shape. The Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project (JMFPP) plans call for construction of a potable water pipeline up to the ski hill, as well as improved electric and fiber optic utilities along Camp May Road and at Pajarito Mountain. Work on the project is scheduled to start April 1.
Managed by the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU), the project has four primary objectives:

County: East Park Parking Lot Closed During Construction

As part of the ongoing East Park Basketball Court and North Mesa Tennis Courts Renovation Project, the parking lot at East Park is closed for the duration of construction as indicated. A temporary walking path will be created to access the pavilion and playground areas.
