New Mexico Offers $5 Million In Teacher Loan Forgiveness

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) is encouraging teachers with outstanding student loans to apply for debt forgiveness through the state’s Teacher Loan Repayment Program, which is now accepting applications until Aug. 1, 2024.

New Mexico licensed teachers working in high-need fields and schools statewide may be eligible for up to $6,000 per year for two years toward principal debt and interest on federal student loans related to teacher education.

I went to the board recently for reasons I am not discussing here…maybe another time.

The high school has a program called School of Choice, or SOC. It has existed for at least 20 years, maybe more. It was in progress when I began teaching at the High School in 2004.

Four students presented the program while their teachers sat in the audience. This was telling. The teachers were 100% confident in their student’s ability to present the program to the board and the public.

Judicial Clerkship’s Summer Externships Underway

SANTA FE – Eight law students began summer externships this week as part of the Judicial Clerkship Program, an initiative that provides training, mentorship, and possible clerkships for those traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.

The New Mexico Supreme Court, the State Bar of New Mexico Committee on Diversity in the Legal Profession, and the Young Lawyers Division jointly manage the Judicial Clerkship Program, now in its fourth year. The externships last 10 weeks.

JJAB Offering One Circle Summer Groups

Los Alamos JJAB News:

Los Alamos JJAB will be offering several One Circle groups this summer: 

          • Co-ed STEAM Group – ages 10 to 12
          • Middle School Girls Group – rising 7th and 8th graders
          • Middle School Boys Group – rising 7th and 8th graders 
          • LGBTQ and Allies Group – teens, 8th grade and up

Groups include various activities and provide a supportive environment for youth to discuss issues that are important to them. An adult facilitator helps guide the group, but the youth participants are empowered to share their knowledge and experiences.

Sadly, Aslam lost his life after unfortunate events a year and a half ago. His bright outlook on life lives on in the educational success of Los Alamos High School graduates.
