NAEP: Historic Decrease In Student Achievement Nationwide

ALBUQUERQUE — This morning, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) released results from the 2022 reading and mathematics assessments for 4th and 8th graders.

These are the first NAEP results since 2019, as the 2021 NAEP was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today’s results echo the concerns raised just months ago from the NAEP Long Term Trend Analysis. According to the data, New Mexico ranks no higher than 47th in any measure.

The Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) Board met Oct. 11 in the School Board Room on Trinity Drive.

Healthy Schools Director Caron Inglis presented an update on the LAPS Healthy Schools program and plans for this year.

The mission of the LAPS Healthy Schools is “to establish district-wide systems and build the capacity of each school to proactively meet the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all students in order to ensure their success at school and beyond,” Inglis said.

Higher Education Department Dedicates $900K To Feed Students In Need

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Higher Education Department has awarded $900,000 to colleges and universities across the state to ensure that students have adequate food and nutrition to succeed in school.

The agency’s Student Food Security Grants were awarded to 15 campus-based student food security projects and are anticipated to benefit more than 15,000 students. The grant funding is part of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s Food Initiative, which directed over $24 million this year across eight state agencies, the largest hunger appropriation in state history.

LAPS Reminds Families Of Stranger Danger After Man Approaches Child Near Chamisa Elementary School

Los Alamos Public Schools has been notified by the Los Alamos Police Department of a recent incident where a child was approached by a stranger and asked to enter the car. The incident did not occur on school property.

An unknown male approached a child in the area of Chamisa Elementary School and told the child, “Hey kid, your mom is sick. Get in the car with me.” The child told the male suspect “no” and kept walking. There were also three other individuals in the vehicle at this time. No other attempts were made to abduct the child.

SANTA FE — Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) announces the launch of the APRENDE apprenticeship program for early childhood education in the spring 2023 semester.
