LAHS Graduate Kaity Burke Earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Kaity Burke with her two 2021 graduating senior yard signs. Burke took a Super Senior year to get another year of JROTC at Los Alamos High School, before graduating this month. Burke also is a member of Los Alamos Girl Scout Troop 116 and proudly displays her Gold Award sign. She earned her Gold Award last November, however due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her accomplishment was not recognized until now. The five remaining members of Troop 116 also have earned their Gold Award. The troop started together in kindergarten and continued through high school. SFCC Fall Registration Opens Wednesday June 2

SFCC News:

SANTA FE — Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) opens registration Wednesday, June 2 for the fall semester.

The fall semester begins Monday, Aug. 23.

Among the many fall program offerings, SFCC is again providing students the opportunity to apply for the Engineering Machining Technologies certificate program. Additionally, classes for automotive technologies will now be offered in the new Automotive Technologies Center on campus.

SFCC is offering a new tuition structure beginning Fall 2021 that will allow students who wish to take 12 to 18 credit hours to pay for only 12 credit hours. Read More

Letters Congratulating Toppers Back In Time For Graduation

The sign congratulating the Toppers was spotted this morning in time for graduation. The Los Alamos Daily Post had been notified May 22 and published a story and photo depicting the fact that someone had rearranged and also took some of the letters from the sign on the lawn at Los Alamos High School. Class of 2021 teacher/sponsor Lori Thompson told the Post that not long after the story ran in the Post the letters were anonymously returned with a note. SANTA FE — New Mexico Public Education Secretary Ryan Stewart Friday announced former Los Lunas School Board member Sonya C’Moya as his first designee to assume temporary governance of the school district and called for nominations of others to join her.

Four Los Alamos High School students garnered awards in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair held virtually May 16-21.

The team of Phillip Ionkov and Anthony Lestone were awarded $2,000 and a second place in the Physics and Astronomy category for their project, Nondestructive Analysis of Geological Sites Through Muon Transmission Imaging.

Karin Ebey placed fourth in Animal Sciences for her project on Climate Change on Crocodilians: Modeling the Effects of Phenological Shifts.

The Los Alamos Middle School Science Bowl team finished in the top 24 at the 2021 National Science Bowl.

Team members include seventh grader Jasper Carpenter and eighth graders Joseph Dale, Linnhtet Htoon, Annie White and Wilson White. The team is coached by LAMS teacher Lindsey Fullop.

The team finished in 23rd place. The middle school contest featured 569 teams from all over the country.

Y And LAFC Offer Mothers Support Group June 1-July 27

Y News:

Amid the stressors of a global pandemic, Los Alamos partners offer a local solution. A free, professionally facilitated support group for mothers 10-11:30 a.m. beginning Tuesday, June 1 at The Family YMCA.

Registration is required to reserve a spot, which is limited to eight participants.

The support program meets Tuesdays through July 27, except June 22, for eight weeks. It is not a therapy program, but will be facilitated by Karla Palmer, who is a therapist at Los Alamos Family Council (LAFC).
