Letter To The Editor: UNM-LA Mil Levy – No Lies, Just Facts and Definitely Scary
By BRADY BURKEIt is being suggested that my editorial piece (link), regarding the understatement of the UNM-LA Mil Levy, i.e. Property Tax Increase, is a misrepresentation and a scare tactic.
There are no lies. he words are carefully chosen and exact. The statements correct. I have no control how someone interprets them. If they translate doubling ‘A’ property tax to doubling ‘YOUR’ property tax then the issue is not in my words.
The information about the Mil Levy comes straight from UNM-LA. There is an existing $1 Mil Levy for the UNM-LA campus. There is a request to implement
Letter To The Editor: Vote ‘For’ Bond To Continue Process To Upgrade School Facilities
By MORRIE PONGRATZOne of the frustrations during my years on the School Board was that all school district operational funds are allocated by the state on a per-pupil basis, regardless of local cost-of-living. Teachers are paid from the operational fund and it costs more to live in Los Alamos. We found that needed maintenance and utility costs for our aging facilities were robbing the operational fund of money that could go to staff salaries.
We formed a team to examine the difference between continuing to patch buildings with operational Read More

Sheehey: Support LA Public Schools And UNM-LA
By PETE SHEEHEYHaving hada scientific career in Los Alamos, I know I owe a lot to good public education. That’s one of the reasons I will vote Yes for the 2017 Los Alamos Public Schools Bond and the UNM-LA 1-mil levy. Both institutions have solid records of getting maximum value for taxpayers’ dollars. These two funding sources will allow them to continue their important contributions to our community.
The LAPS Bond will not increase our property taxes. It will continue the Schools’ strategic funding plan approved by voters in 2009 and 2013. This stage of the plan will Read More

New Mexico Gov. Susana MartinezLetter To The Editor: Dispelling Subtle Lie And Scaremonger Tactics
By TERRY GOLDMANNo, Brady Burke does NOT pay enough in taxes. (link)
Compared to most of New Mexico, Los Alamos County property tax rates are low; compared to most of the developed part of the country, our rate is absurdly low. I once looked into the big LA rate, which was about five times ours, if I recall correctly.

One of PEEC’s most creative volunteers is Dr. Galen Gisler.
Gisler was born under the dark and starry skies of New Mexico. As a child he read about Saturn floating on water, an analogy from one of his well-loved science books. He imagined the planet floating in his bathtub in Clovis, where he was raised. In that moment of wonder and curiosity, a seed was planted. It grew into a passion for astronomy, one that would last a lifetime and enable him to share his knowledge and curiosity with others.

Letter To The Editor: Vote NO To Doubling A Property Tax
By BRADY BURKEIt’s true. You are being asked to double one of your property taxes. Your property taxes are made up of lots of individual tax burdens.
This whole LAPS Bond issue has been focusing on how there will not be a Tax Rate increase. Just look at the front page of Thursday’s Los Alamos Daily Post, first article (link) on the Front Page, continues onto Page 8; LAPS: No Tax Rate Increase. Only one line buried in a paragraph says that LAPS Bond is one of two items on the ballot.
The second item on the ballot is the Property Tax Poison Pill. It is the UNM-LA Read More

Letter To The Editor: UNM-LA Advisory Board
By JAMES ROBINSONLetter To The Editor: Thank You To Taxpayers Of Los Alamos
By Past School Board PresidentsWe collectively write this letter to express our deep appreciation to our local taxpayers, parents and community members that have unselfishly and generously given to support the future of Los Alamos. We embarked upon this journey in 2007 when we had more than $130 million in capital facilities needs. Since then Los Alamos has passed $60 million in bond funds and received $20 million in matching State funds.

Wadt: On Supporting The School Bond
By BILL WADTRooney: Education Makes A Difference
By Dr. CYNTHIA ROONEYOver the past several months, I have had the opportunity to represent UNM-Los Alamos at numerous events. When invited to speak, it is easy for me to talk about the important role that UNM-LA plays in our community. Yet, it is even more rewarding to listen. At one event, a retiree told me about how her professional career at LANL was re-invented after she decided to take a biology class at UNM-LA and then took “every class offered by Dr. Leslie Dendy.”
At another event, I spoke with a former student and her current employer who both started their accounting careers with Read More
