Letter To The Editor: UNM-LA Provides Important Value To Our Community

By DAVID and TERRY IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

In the next few days, Los Alamos residents will receive a ballot in the mail asking them to support education in our community. The need to continue upgrading our elementary school buildings is self-evident; so is the need for UNM-LA to improve its finances. We hope you will vote in the affirmative to support both questions.

Other letters have explained in more detail and more authoritatively than we can the precarious financial state of our local branch of UNM. Let us remind ourselves of the value that UNM-LA provides to our community.

Letter To The Editor: Community’s Help Is Needed As One Of Our Jewels Is Under Assault

By PATRICK SORAN
Los Alamos

In my mind’s eye, a model community needs several positive assets: good governance, good public services (police, fire, utilities, etc.), good job opportunities, good medical facilities, well-educated citizens, scenic surroundings, and good educational opportunities (K-12 and collegiate). Los Alamos is such a community capable of possessing all of these assets. However, we as a community need to support and nourish these assets and for the most part we do support them. Unfortunately one of our jewels is under assault.

Our UNM-LA branch college has lost just

Wismer: The Mil Levy IS Important For UNM-LA And For Los Alamos County

By LISA J. WISMER
Director, Business Operations
UNM-Los Alamos

Many individuals considering the upcoming special school election are asking UNM-LA what happened after the failed mil election in 2013. What financial impacts did the campus sustain and how did it respond? Providing that information may help frame the challenge UNM-LA is facing moving forward as it continues to serve the Los Alamos community.

After the 2013 election, UNM-LA was faced with difficult decisions to determine which programs and services were essential to UNM-LA and which ones could continue to be supported by the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Supporting Our Schools Is The Right Thing To Do

By ELLEN BEN-NAIM
Los Alamos

Early next month, you will receive a mail-in ballot for the school bond election. I urge you to join me in supporting our community’s most important asset – our children – by voting YES.

This is one envelope that won’t get buried in the mail pile. We will mail our ballots back on the same day they arrive for several reasons.

First, supporting our students is the right thing to do. My three children have thrived in the Los Alamos Public Schools, and have benefited from the new Los Alamos Middle School and Los Alamos High School wing. I want the same opportunities for future Read More

Letter To The Editor: Please Help Keep UNM-LA’s ‘Engine’ Running … Vote For Mil Levy

By Dr. LESLIE DENDY
Los Alamos

Los Alamos residents will soon be voting on a 1 mil levy request for UNM-Los Alamos. I’ve been teaching at UNM-LA since 1980 (and before that at its precursor, UNM-Northern Branch College) and I know we need it!

As a parent whose kids went all the way through Los Alamos public schools, I know L.A. voters consider education vital, but there are some things you may not know about UNM-LA in particular. UNM-Albuquerque does NOT support us financially – it’s not even legally possible. We get most of our money from the state, which has been cutting back rather Read More

YMCA News:

In early December, The Family YMCA completed a makeover of its foyer to highlight its Heritage Club donor recognition piece. The tree’s metal leaves name donors to the Y’s endowment program.

The idea of a tree is that it represents a seed that is planted and eventually grows to provide shade, produce oxygen and give a home to living creatures, Y Senior Program Director Diana Martinez said.

”An endowment program is like planting a seed for the future and for others,” she said. The Y also created a ‘word

The Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) is one of the most common and abundant of the North American Woodpeckers.

They are not as common at the Los Alamos Nature Center as the Acorn Woodpeckers frequently seen, but there have been many reports of Hairy Woodpeckers in the area.

Slightly smaller than the Acorn Woodpecker, the Hairy Woodpecker enjoys the suet feeder and the various seed mixes we use. Away from feeders, they tend to be shyer than Acorn Woodpeckers.

The Hairy Woodpecker has a black-and-white striped face, all-white belly, Read More

Princeton Study: Electron-Photon Small-Talk Could Have Big Impact On Quantum Computing

PRINCETON News:

In a step that brings silicon-based quantum computers closer to reality, researchers at Princeton University have built a device in which a single electron can pass its quantum information to a particle of light.

The particle of light, or photon, can then act as a messenger to carry the information to other electrons, creating connections that form the circuits of a quantum computer.

The research will appear today in the journal Science. A PDF is available on request. The research was conducted at Princeton and HRL Laboratories in Malibu, Calif.,
