Letter To The Editor: Let’s Keep Momentum Going … Vote For LAPS Bond And UNM-LA Mill Levy

By STEVEN GIRRENS
Los Alamos

I was so proud of our community when the 2009 LAPS bond passed. I was equally proud of our community in 2013 when the bond was passed again. Since then, the Middle School renovation projects were finished in October 2013 and Aspen Elementary reconstruction was completed in October 2014. In addition, several safety improvements were made at every school along with significant protective maintenance upgrades.

Forty-year-old Barranca Elementary is next on the list for major renovation. Plans are to replace 60 percent of all classrooms, remove all portable buildings

By DAVID and HEIDI ROGERS
Los Alamos

As local parents of two Los Alamos High School students, we are writing in support of the upcoming mail-in vote on the UNM-LA mill levy.

UNM-LA benefits everyone in the community, and we are especially thankful that all of our high school kids can take advantage of joint classes at classes at UNM-LA while they are still in high school. We would like UNM-LA to remain a vibrant part of our community for Read More

By Marilyn Doolen and Betsy Comly

AAUW-Los Alamos

Higher education is essential to the productivity and innovation of our workforce in New Mexico.

College-educated workers earn higher wages and experience lower levels of unemployment than do workers with less education. Research done by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) forecasts that by 2020, two out of every three jobs will require some postsecondary education.

For many women, that education comes through attending community colleges

School buildings are in need of renovations to improve existing infrastructure. In years past, Los Alamos has had matching funds from the state. Currently, there is no money from the state.

In addition, the state is cutting the current budget in 2017
