Boerigter Announces Run For School Board

By STEVE BOERIGTER
White Rock

I plan to run for the Los Alamos Public School Board in District 2 (Chamisa Elementary in White Rock) in the upcoming election.

Our district has been served well by Matt Williams for the past four years. Upon hearing about his choice to not seek reelection, I have decided to run for the position.

The LAPS Board has a substantial responsibility to our community. Our schools and the educational opportunities available in Los Alamos are a strong attractor for new Laboratory employees, retirees and others who come to Los Alamos.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my new community for assisting with my fundraiser this past weekend at the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce.

I would like to thank my teacher Annette Sehorn, the Los Alamos Culinary teacher, Mrs. Jones and the many friends and fellow DECA members who assisted with the success of the project.

Ruby Selvage is a dear friend and gracious host to help me in so many ways. She was one of more than 15 students, rolling gingerbread dough and creating houses and kits to sell for Read More

Letter To The Editor: Concerning The Bond Election

By CAMILLE MORRISON
Los Alamos

I have a problem with Jim Hall’s letter about the Bond Election.

According to the plan published in the Los Alamos Daily Post, North Mesa was to be developed after Barranca Mesa so they built the Junior High School there. Our kids were all bussed to North Mesa. The land that was set aside for a Junior HS in White Rock is now the Pinon Trails subdivision.

Not all the schools were built in the 1950s. We moved here in 1967 and Chamisa had not been built yet. It was designed to have a third pod when the school population increased. By the time it was needed

Massengale: How Education Has Shaped This Town

By KATE MASSENGALE Ph.D
Retired Associate Professor of English
Retired Dean of Instruction

It will come as no surprise that I support the increase of one mil for UNM-LA this January, as I began teaching there in 1993 and retired as Dean of Instruction in 2013. But my commitment to education began a long time ago. Despite having no children of our own, my husband Bill and I have always voted to support K-12 education wherever we lived. And we have given to our alma maters Texas A & M and Rice University. But in recent years, we have focused our giving to UNM-LA because of its great need.

Letter To The Editor: Seeing Both Sides Of The Coin

By LAURA LOY
Los Alamos

I find myself in a unique position to see why both issues being raised on the mail-in ballot in January are worthy of our community’s support, and here is why.

First and foremost, I am the parent of a student attending Barranca Mesa Elementary School. While the initiative to rebuild Barranca will most likely not benefit my daughter personally before she moves on to Los Alamos Middle School, I fully support the bond being put forth by Los Alamos Public Schools. Our investment in education is so important to our community and especially our youth, who are the leaders of the future.

Steinhaus On Last Two Weeks Before Break

From Dr. Kurt Steinhaus
LAPS Superintendent

Good morning from the Superintendent’s desk!

As we start the last two weeks before break, here is a thought: rather than counting the days, let’s make the days count.

Ideas that may help us make the days count for our students and everyone on staff:

  • Community: we are part of many different communities – family, faith, friends and school. This creates diversity, which is good and makes for wonderful celebrations.
  • Empathy: we can learn to see the world through others’ perspectives. While this is a time of happiness for many, it also can be
