Knights of Columbus Awards LAHS Scholarships

Fifteen Los Alamos High School graduating seniors recently received scholarships from the Knights of Columbus, Council 3137.

A total of $8,500 was available for scholarship awards this year, including a donation by John and Judy Ireland in memory of their daughter, Jamie Lee. This is the 14th year the Knights have provided such scholarships.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal benefit organization that raises funds for charitable causes. Funding for the annual LAHS graduating senior scholarships is generated by holding a fun-loving golf tournament at the Los Alamos Read More

In collaboration with the Teen Center, Pajarito Environmental Education Center, the Department of Utilities and the Los Alamos Golf Course, Matthew Allen, Golf Course superintendent, recently completed a new educational class with teens.

“Learning on the Links” was designed to introduce teens to environmental concerns and how they relate to various types of facilities in Los Alamos County. Classes were held for six weeks during the spring school semester and 17 students participated.

Due to the popularity of the Nature Center’s Night Sky shows in the planetarium, more presentations have been added.

Join geologist Patrick Rowe Saturday, June 20  to explore Cerro Pedernal, a prominent landmark in the Chama Valley, rich in both beauty and history. The Cerro Pedernal is narrow mesa, capped by volcanic rock and containing the outcrops of the bedded Pedernal Chert Member of the Abiquiu Tuff several hundred feet below its flat summit. Artifacts made of Pedernal Chert have been found hundreds of miles from its source.

Harvard Medical School-trained psychiatrist David Quinn, M.D., will discuss hearing loss and mental health at the Hearing Loss Association of America Santa Fe chapter June meeting. 

Dr. Quinn is an assistant professor and Medical Director of the Consultation Liaison Service at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. With all the rain in the community lately, beautiful wildflowers abound.

Join PEEC’s Jemez Mountain Herbarium curator Chick Keller at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 15 for a Wildflower Walk to discover their names and locations. This is an easy walk to identify some of the wildflowers that can be found in and around Los Alamos.

The group will meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road and carpool to the trail that Keller will select based on what is blooming at the time. The walk is free and no advance registration required.
