NWS Conducts Weather Spotter Class At PEEC

Kerry Jones of the National Weather Service (NWS) will a conduct SKYWARNTM Weather Spotter class 5:30-7:30 p.m., Aug. 7 at Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).
Meteorologists from the NWS will teach the basics of severe local storms, to include thunderstorms, flash floods, downburst winds, tornadoes, and more. They also will talk about NWS operations, important safety information, and how to stay prepared.

Los Alamos Public Schools received high marks from the New Mexico Public Education Department. Three schools were awarded “A” grades and four schools earned “B” grades for 2014.
Just released report cards by the NMPED reflected the high quality of instruction by Los Alamos schools. Schools receiving “A” grades included Los Alamos High School, Barranca Mesa Elementary and Mountain Elementary. Aspen, Chamisa, Pinon and Los Alamos Middle School received “B” grades.

This year marks the 22nd Annual Butterfly Count in Los Alamos County, but this year the count carries a special meaning.
This is the first count since the passing of Living Treasure Dorothy Hoard, who initiated the Los Alamos County annual butterfly counts more than 20 years ago. As such, the annual butterfly count will from now on be known as the “Dorothy Hoard Memorial Butterfly Count.”

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) will be holding a course beginning on July 30 and running Wednesday evenings for four weeks. in which two local experts, Terry Foxx and Craig Martin, will teach the group how to identify wildflowers.
