Summer temps are predicted to be high again this year. “Extreme heat” is a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two days. Extreme heat affects everyone, but children, older adults, overweight individuals and field workers are at greater risk.
Mitigating the impacts of extreme heat can be challenging for those without air conditioning, but even those with cooled air need to make sure their system isn’t being overworked.

ALBUQUERQUE – The Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency has issued an amendment adding Otero County and flooding to the notice of Major Disaster Declaration in New Mexico related to South Fork and Salt Fires as declared by the President on June 20, 2024.
Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is available to individuals whose employment or self-employment was lost or interrupted as a direct result of the 2024 Wildfires in the areas of Lincoln County, Otero County, and the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Read More

A rare (in Los Alamos anyway) Hooded Warbler discovered Saturday along Reservoir Road continued to stay in the area through Sunday. The nearest breeding area for this species is about 1,000 miles away in east Texas, so a midsummer record like this is extra special. Many folks came out to see it. New Mexico Game & Fish (NMG&F) has reported an unusually high volume of wildlife complaints in recent days involving large predators. The behavior exhibited by these animals is not typical during this time of year nor in these conditions. In several of these incidents, large predators have gone after livestock and pets and, on one occasion, fully entered an occupied dwelling.

FBI Seeking Public’s Assistance In Identifying Cause Of South Fork Fire And Salt Fire, Offering Up To $10,000 Reward
FBI News:
The FBI is assisting local, state, federal and tribal partners in the ongoing investigation of the fires burning near Ruidoso. The South Fork Fire and Salt Fire were discovered on June 17, 2024.
The FBI is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the cause of these fires.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for starting the fires.
The FBI asks that anyone who may have any information pertaining to the cause of the fires to please call 1-800-CALL-FBI or online at tips.fbi.gov.
