Wildfire season has begun in New Mexico and the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) reminds residents of the increased risk of wildfires.

Presently the fire danger in Los Alamos is “High” and to enhance public safety and mitigate potential fire threats, LAFD urges all residents to review and act on the recommendations outlined in the “Ready, Set, Go! Wildland Fire Action Guide” – a comprehensive resource designed to prepare residents for the possibility of a wildfire.

A handsome pronghorn was spotted Saturday in Vaughn, about 85 miles southeast of Santa Fe. Pronghorns are usually timid, but not this one. Pronghorn are one of North America’s most impressive mammals. Not only do pronghorn have the longest land migration in the continental United States, they also are the fastest land animal in North America. Pronghorn can run at speeds close to 60 miles an hour. SANTA FE — The State Parks Division of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (State Parks) announces another series of informational meetings to discuss adjustments to proposed park fees.

South Fork Fire Forces Village Of Ruidoso Evacuation

Ruidoso OEM News:

An emergency mandatory GO evacuation was issued at 6:48 p.m. today for the entire Village of Ruidoso due to the South Fork Fire.

The Ruidoso Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is monitoring the fire burning on the Mescalero Apache reservation, approximately 2-3 miles from the Village of Ruidoso limits, specifically near the Upper Canyon area.

The South Fork Fire was first reported around 10:50 a.m. today and has now burned about 5,000 acres.

  • All District Offices closed June 19 for Federal Holiday

SANTA FE—To honor the significance of the Juneteenth holiday, the Santa Fe National Forest. (SFNF) will waive fees at many day use recreation sites Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

All SFNF District Offices and the Supervisor’s Office in Santa Fe will be closed and will resume business hours Thursday, June 20.

Spring runoff has peaked early and streamflows are dropping throughout the state. This is an excellent time to fish streams like the Rio Chama, Rio de los Pinos and the Pecos. The higher flows of spring runoff put the trout in an actively feeding mood and now that the flows are dropping and easier to fish the fishing can be quite good.

Paraglider Pilot Emma Goldberg Lands At Overlook Park

Motorized paraglider pilot Emma Goldberg of Los Alamos out for a ride this morning landed at Overlook Park in White Rock. Goldberg has been flying for a year and has logged 250 flights. She sets wind direction flags on the field for taking off and landing. Goldberg spent about 50 minutes flying this morning over the local area and said she can fly up to about 2.5 hours on a full tank. SFNF Fire Managers Suppressing Glorieta Wildfire

SFNF News:

Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) fire managers were notified of a new wildfire start this afternoon, named the Glorieta Wildfire in the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District, southeast of Thompson Peak on La Cueva Ridge.

The cause of the wildfire is undetermined but there was lightning detected in the area from thunderstorm activity the last couple days.

Smoke may be visible from Glorieta, looking north on Interstate 25 and firefighters are focused on actively suppressing the wildfire.

NMGF To Hold Two Public Meetings On 10-year Review, Revision Of State Wildlife Action Plan For New Mexico

NMGF News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMGF) is holding two public meetings to discuss the 10-year review and revision of the State Wildlife Action Plan for New Mexico (SWAP).

The SWAP revision process was initiated in May 2023 and presented at the State Game Commission meeting Aug. 25, 2023.

The final revision is due to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by Oct. 1, 2025. 

The SWAP identifies Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN), their habitats, threats, and conservation actions that can be taken to mitigate these threats and benefit SGCN. Part of the revision Read More
