LANL: Statement Of Findings Issued For Los Alamos Canyon Sediment Reduction And Restoration Project

The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s (DOE/NNSA) Los Alamos Field Office has issued a Floodplain Statement of Findings for the Los Alamos Canyon Sediment Reduction and Restoration Project.

The Los Alamos County Department of Public Utilities is planning to restore and address sedimentation from post wildfire flooding impacts in Los Alamos Canyon located within the 100-year floodplain.

This restoration project includes:

  • The upper watershed area above the reservoir;
  • The reservoir; and
  • The area where Los Alamos Canyon Creek, water pipeline

SFNF: Forest Service Partners With Neighbors Helping Neighbors To Distribute Firewood To Local Communities

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest is partnering with the Santa Fe Community Foundation and the United Methodist Committee on Relief/Neighbors Helping Neighbors to provide firewood directly to those impacted by the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon fires.

An agreement was recently signed that provided $200,000 dollars to support this locally based organization in providing fuelwood to communities. As part of the agreement, hazard trees from the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon fire areas will be cut and delivered directly to households in Mora and San Miguel Counties.

Big-game rifle hunting seasons open in October and run practically the entire month. Campgrounds will be filled with hunters and lots of dispersed camping spots will be filled. Don’t be alarmed if you hear gunshots in the woods.

Working on his senior thesis at the Institute of Native American Arts in Santa Fe, filmmaker/musician Gary Medina Cook went to the library to conduct research inspired by his grandmother. Medina Cook said he remembers when he was 10 years old, his grandmother cooked tortillas in her kitchen and told him stories about their family’s Native American grandmothers who were taken captive by the Spanish in the 1700s and 1800s.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) released updates for the month of September 2023 on the Enforcement Watch.

The Enforcement Watch is a listing of all active and resolved enforcement cases. Active cases involve an alleged violation of a regulation, rule, permit, license, etc. Resolved cases are those that were adjudicated in court of law or administratively resolved.

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest has been removing hazardous trees from the Hermit’s Peak and Calf Canyon fire area. The trees are being cut down and decked to be made available for free firewood in Johnsons Mesa, Capulin and Walker Flats.
