Recall Our Joshua Chamberlains In The Building Of Our Nation

Every Fourth of July is a special day for recalling people of all walks who have moved our nation forward from the times of its origin to today.

The holiday known for its brass bands and fireworks is also time to weigh the grimmer work of patriotism. The words of our time grow less civil each year: Partisan vitriol smokes the air as would rifle shots at Gettysburg. History leaves clues.

The Civil War of 1861-1865 is rich with lessons for our time. Much can be learned Read More

Bald Eagle Is Great Symbol Of American Patriotism

This bald eagle perched in a tree was spotted Wednesday during a road trip in Big Timber, Mont., near the Boulder River. Congress chose the bald eagle as the emblem of the United States of America June 20, 1782 because of its long life, great strength and majestic appearance, and also because it was then believed to exist only on this continent. Benjamin Franklin thought the wild turkey would be a better symbol because it was a much more respectable bird. The other members of Congress did not agree with Mr. Franklin. Weekly Fishing Report: July 3

By GEORGE MORSE

Los Alamos Daily Post

New Mexico anglers like to travel to Southern Colorado to fish some of the admittedly great rivers, lakes and streams there. Unfortunately, they are in for an unpleasant surprise this year.

The 2018 Colorado legislature passed a bill (Senate Bill 18-143) that increases the cost of all fishing licenses, with particularly big increases to nonresident fees. In past seasons, the cost of a season, nonresident fishing license with a second-rod stamp was $61. This year, that same license would cost $104.

In addition, the

Birds do it, bees do it. Even ants and fish in the sea do it. When certain individuals group together, they create a “swarm intelligence”— a collective brain capable of solving complex problems, which would be insurmountable for an isolated individual.
