Apricot wood put in a lathe had checked badly so now will be made into small crosses. Courtesy/Fr. Theophan

By Father Theophan
Rector of Saint Job of Pochaiv Orthodox Church
Vocations Director for the UOC of USA

After the success I had a month ago with the wooden practice chalice, I decided to take a shot at turning a small piece of apricot wood that I had been given a few years ago.

When I got it, the tree had just been cut down, and so the wood was damp and green. Some experts advocate turning green wood, some others warn against it.

Once a tree is cut, the wood, “green” at that stage, starts Read More

Fr. Glenn: True Paternity

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Happy Fathers’ Day to all of you dads out there. What a blessing you have in your children whom you have had the privilege to “co-create” with their moms and with God Himself, parents and child becoming a sort of domestic trinity in yourselves, made in your, mom’s and God’s own image. But, of course, fatherhood entails much more than just physical procreation; true fatherhood is being example, protector, provider, teacher, a just and calm disciplinarian when necessary, and even model for your children. A father is not so much the one who simply shares genetic material with his Read More

I recently led a memorial service for a teenager who died due to a fentanyl overdose. During the service, a relative expressed heartfelt concern for our community, saying, “This is such a beautiful place–this shouldn’t be happening here!”

I completely agree that the death of a young person by drug overdose should not be happening. I question the idea, however, that “here” is somehow Read More

An Open Book: June 21st Will Always Be My Father’s Day

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

Dear Readers:

Father’s Day is personally anticlimactic now; I now have children who are themselves fathers, and it is they who deserve recognition for chasing after toddlers. After all, being the father of thirty-year-olds is now much less physically or mentally demanding than it was thirty years ago. However, thirty years is not long enough to have forgotten the joys and trials of raising small children, so I want to honor them and their partners as they engage in the hardest job they will ever love.

I hope you will enjoy this column originally published in 2015, Read More

Home Country: Squash Bug Stomping

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

Dud was heading home in his pickup truck when he saw the strange goings-on at the Bahdziewicz place. Abraham Lincoln Bahdziewicz was out in the family’s large garden with a full complement of kids who were happily hopping around. Some of the kids came from the neighborhood, but most of them were homegrown Bahdziewicz kids.

The Bahdziewicz family had a great garden and went at the whole thing scientifically and in great fun, because this is one family that runs short on cash but long on kids.

Dud pulled over and watched for a minute as Abe laughingly directed the family dancers Read More

Fr. Glenn: Law? What Law?

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

It’s always rather an adventure driving between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, especially on weekdays when commuter traffic is particularly heavy–cars flying past the poor slob who obeys the speed limit, often receiving for his lawfulness a one-fingered wave in thanks (“Oh, how awful; the fingers on each side of that middle one have been amputated! Poor fellow.”) And, of course, there are far too few resources for police to enforce speed limits strictly, so many go rocketing on their merry Doppler-shifting speeds fearlessly and virtually unhindered. (BTW, a favorite red bumper Read More
