ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico Gas Company is holding its annual Native American Scholarship Program banquet on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, July 26, at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Notah Begay III, founder of the NB3 Foundation, golf professional, four-time PGA Tour winner and NBC Golf/Golf Channel analyst will be the guest speaker.
A $3,000 scholarship will be presented to 20 Native American students from across New Mexico. Those eligible can be enrolled in bachelor’s and graduate degree programs, community college programs or pursuing trade school certifications. Read More
New Mexicans Can Now Apply For Possible FEMA Assistance After Severe Storms, Flooding & Landslides

SANTA FE — FEMA is supporting state and local recovery efforts for New Mexicans in Lincoln County who sustained damage from the severe storms, flooding and landslides that began June 23, 2025, and continuing.
Financial assistance is available to eligible homeowners and renters in Lincoln County. FEMA may be able to help with serious needs, displacement, basic home repair costs, personal property loss or other disaster-caused needs.
Residents with homeowners, renters or flood insurance should file a claim first. By law, FEMA cannot duplicate benefits for losses covered by insurance. Read More

I write to appreciate Jody Benson’s civilized response (link) to Rabbi Shlachter’s post (link).
Of course, I have some quibbles with language. Bret Stephens’ NYT opinion piece (link) covers better than I can, the misuse of the word “genocide”. Benson degrades the meaning and power of that word just as those who call someone a Nazi for their bad (not even evil) behavior. We should all be more careful in our use of language.

CHARLES (CHUCK) I FAIRCHILD Oct. 26, 1932 – July 4, 2025
Chuck was born in Marfa, Texas, to Leo and Anne (Koenig) Fairchild. He fondly spent his childhood in Fort Davis, where as a kid, his favorite hobby was chasing and riding wild donkeys with his three brothers. He later moved to Carlsbad, where he worked in his dad’s grocery store until graduation. There, he learned to speak Spanish fluently.
As an adult, he settled in Los Alamos, New Mexico. A small mountain town and builder of the atom bomb, it became his hometown, living most of his established life there, which in total, spanned 92 years.
