The community is invited to join Samizdat Bookstore and Teahouse Aug. 5 for a virtual author talk from M. G. Sheftall for the release of his latest book, Nagasaki: The Last Witnesses.
Sheftall will join remotely from Japan to discuss both this new book and his first book of the series, Hiroshima: The Last Witnesses.
The talk will be held in Fuller Lodge. There will be tea and refreshments starting at 6:30 p.m., with the remote presentation beginning at 7 p.m. Afterward, signed copies of both books will be available for sale.

SANTA FE — The Bureau of Land Management New Mexico State Office is now accepting nominations of lands for competitive geothermal leasing for the next geothermal lease sale that is tentatively scheduled for March 2026.
All nominations must be received by Sept. 25, 2025.

Power Restored To Western Area After Lightning Strike
Power has been restored to the Western Area after a lightning-related incident occurred at about 12:50 p.m. today. Standby electric linemen from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities responded to the power outage and by 2 p.m. had restored the electric power.
If power is still out in individual homes, Deputy Utility Manager – Electric Distribution Stephen Marez suggested that residents check their breaker switches before calling to report an outage. Lightning storms can often cause surges that trigger the breaker.

Power Outage Underway In Western Area

Los Alamos Golf Course Update On Opening Status

The Los Alamos County Golf Course was opened for play on the front nine this past week, and this morning, July 22, staff evaluated the course for any problem areas and the overall status of the course for additional play.
While staff confirmed that the front nine is still good for play, and thanked the golfing community for taking care of the course and filling in their divots, they feel that it is also beneficial for the course to rest for a few days between open days.

The 2025 New Mexico Long Course State Championships were held July 10-13 at the West Mesa Aquatic Center in Albuquerque, hosted by Beast Aquatic Club. Mountain Club qualified 20 swimmers, 17 of whom competed in 98 individual events and 9 relays. They finished 4th overall with 389 team points among 18 teams.

Robert (Bob) Howard Sherman passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, following a brief illness.
Bob lived a very full life and remained active and vigorous throughout his life. Born on November 18, 1929, Bob always had a keen interest in science and loved conducting chemistry experiments in the basement of his childhood home in Chicago. He spoke fondly of attending Lane Technical High School.
