Monsoon Awareness Week In New Mexico June 8-13

Gov. Susana Martinez has proclaimed June 8-13 as “Monsoon Awareness Week” in New Mexico. The National Weather Service (NWS) and New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (NMDHSEM) will mark Monsoon Awareness Week in New Mexico with a series of informational projects to promote awareness.

New Mexico State Police Investigate Officer Involved Shooting in Espanola

NMSP News:

New Mexico State Police (NMSP) report that at about 10 a.m. Sunday, two Espanola police officers responded to the area of Riverside Drive and Corlett Road in Espanola to the report of a suspicious person.

They made contact with the person and the person and during the contact the person produced a weapon and pointed it at the officers. One officer fired his weapon, striking the person.

The person was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead. He is identified as Victor Villalpando, 16, of Espanola.

High Profile Absconder Arrested

SANTA FE — New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) Security Threat Intelligence Unit detectives, with collaboration with its partners at the U.S. Marshals, have arrested parole absconder Joseph Borja.

Borja was on parole for child abuse resulting in great bodily harm or death.

Borja, after serving a year and a half in prison, was paroled in August. He absconded at the end of November and since then officers have been on his heels. Bridge Work Continues on U.S. 84/285 and North Tesuque Interchange

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) will continue bridge rehabilitation work on U.S. 84/285 and North Tesuque Interchange (Exit 172) north of Santa Fe near the Tesuque Village at mile post 171.6. 

6 a.m. Saturday, June 7, the North Tesuque Interchange (Exit 172) will be closed, and the U.S. 84/285 northbound and southbound lanes will be reduced to one lane and be detoured through the off ramps and on ramps at this interchange. Chester Nez, the last remaining of the original 29 Navajos recruited by the Marine Corps to develop the legendary code that was used for vital communications during battle  died Wednesday at his home in Albuquerque at age 93.

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) and the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department announced today two bats from the South Valley of Albuquerque have tested positive for rabies in the last two weeks.
