‘Amelie’ Wins You Over With Whimsical Sweetness

The next film in the library’s Free Film Series, while not technically holiday themed, is so buttery rich and honeyed that it belongs in The Nutcracker’s Land of Sweets.

Nominations Sought for Best Children’s Book by NM Woman

An outstanding New Mexican writer will be honored for her work next spring when her children’s book receives the prestigious Zia Award.

New Mexico women writers are invited to submit their books for consideration for the award, given each year by New Mexico Press Women at the annual spring conference. To be eligible to receive the award, selected winners must commit to reading at the award luncheon during the 2014 conference in April.

Inez Ross first published “Perilous Pursuit on the Santa Fe Trail” in 2005, shortly after completing an eight year quest to hike the entire Santa Fe Trail. The book is a hardback with cover drawn by D’anne Andrykovich, a well-known Michigan artist.

“The Nutcracker” is a fixture in Los Alamos. Watching the ballet Friday night, I could not think of a better way to kick off the holidays.

This is Dance Arts Los Alamos’ 16th “Nutcracker.” The ballet depicts a young girl who dreams about a journey into the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve. This year, DALA brought on a new director, Jonathan Guise, and some new features were mixed into the show.

Los Alamos Little Theatre will hold auditions for Diane Samuels’ drama Kindertransport at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Performing Arts Center, 1670 Nectar St. Callbacks by invitation will take place Thursday, Dec. 19. The cast consists of five women and one man.
