Think New Mexico Magnifies Impact With New Staff

Think New Mexico News:

Think New Mexico, the nonpartisan, results-oriented think tank serving New Mexicans, has added three staff members to magnify its impact as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Think New Mexico’s mission it to improve the lives of all New Mexicans, especially those who lack a strong voice in the political process. It is best known for successfully championing the enactment of landmark legislation repealing the state’s tax on food, making full-day kindergarten accessible to every child, ending predatory lending and repealing the tax on Social Security income for lower Read More

Weekly Fishing Report: Sept. 17, 2024

Streamflow on the Rio Grande has dropped and is now less than 100 cubic-feet-per-second at Cerro. That is where the Rio Grande enters New Mexico from Colorado.

The low water makes the stretch of river from the confluence with the Red River north to the Colorado state border in prime condition for anglers. Pools and pockets behind boulders may be fished more effectively during this low water period than they can be when the water is higher.

The daily limit in this section is two trout. There are big brown trout in this section and a few wild rainbows. Read More

Hampton: Transportation Board Sept. 5 Meeting Update

By DAVID HAMPTON
Chair

Los Alamos Transportation Board

At our last Transportation Board meeting, Sept. 5, 2024, we received a presentation and took public comments on the Pedestrian Master Plan Update. The County has tasked Wilson and Co. to conduct the plan update that will replace the current plan from 1998.

The previous plan focused mainly on Safe Routes to School, which has largely been implemented and continues to this day. This update aims to enhance safety, infrastructure and accessibility in the Los Alamos Townsite and White Rock Town Center. Essential tasks include reviewing past Read More

Determan: Vandalism Of Political Signs

By ANDREA DETERMAN
Chair
Democratic Party of Los Alamos

As chair of the Democratic Party of Los Alamos County, I join in strongly rejecting the vandalism of political signs reported in the Los Alamos Daily Post (link).

Every citizen has the constitutional right and privilege to freely express their opinion, political or otherwise.

We encourage everyone to become educated about the critical decisions our country will be making in the upcoming election, and to express their support for whatever choices they feel are best for us as individuals and as a community.

Imagine a truck stop the size of a small town. It covers 6,000 acres, more than 9 square miles. It has connections to move cargo from anywhere in the world to anywhere else. It serves trucks, railroad and air transport, and even though it’s 800 miles from the ocean it links with the largest seaports in the Western hemisphere.

It can service the most modern and energy-efficient trucks, next door to a comfortable hotel for drivers. It has warehouses and factories, privately developed, which create the opportunity for value-added Read More

Fr. Glenn: Get Thee Behind Me, Satan!

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Hmph. Someone brought cookies to work. Again, dang it. Well … how ‘bout just one? Well … another one won’t hurt. And before long, it’s “Is that the last of them?” Blast.

A trivial example, but … oh, the temptations of life! Always those seeking to be good persons, whether they be Christians or no, must battle those pestilently persistent deadly sins: lust, gluttony, envy, wrath, pride, greed, sloth—all, of course, rooted in selfishness. Even when we know what is right and good to do, sometimes our passions—coupled with bad judgment—lead us to surrender the will to that which departs Read More

On August 17th after traveling by airplane, a car, a train, a bus, a ferry, another bus and another ferry, my friend and I arrived on the Isle of Iona for a weeklong pilgrimage for a retreat on caring for creation. We had wanted to visit the ancient Isle of Iona for some time, as it is known as the heart of Celtic Spirituality and site of pilgrimage Read More
