Andrus: Enhancing The Economic Vitality Of Los Alamos

By PAUL ANDRUS
Community Development Department Director
Los Alamos County

As a resident of Los Alamos County for over ten years, I am deeply aware of the various challenges our community faces in enhancing its economic vitality.

Today, we are at a critical juncture where our traditionally small, quiet community needs to modernize to support Los Alamos National Laboratory in fulfilling its mission.

To navigate this transition, I have assembled a team of professionals specializing in housing, local businesses, downtown revitalization and tourism. Let me introduce our team:

Op/Ed: MRA And Tools In The Toolkit

By KEVIN HOLSAPPLE
Los Alamos

The current MRA discussion about adding another “tool” to the “toolkit” for encouraging development to satisfy community needs and desires and the call for citizen input prompted me to provide input to the County.  Several friends encouraged me to share the input in an Op-Ed in our local media.

Three tools already in the County toolkit are the Local Economic Development Act (LEDA), the Los Alamos Creative District, and the White Rock MRA. All of these provide paths for the County to help projects that will help our community achieve our plans and goals without violation

Shin: Los Alamos Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Commission Necessary For An Open And Transparent Government

By LISA SHIN
Los Alamos Family Eyecare

On May 9, 2024, our County Council voted to approve the boundaries of a Metropolitan Redevelopment Area (MRA). Now, it is time for our Council to establish an MRA Commission which complies with the New Mexico Redevelopment Code. This Commission should not include County Councilors or County employees, but rather key members from the community with experience in commercial property development, affordable housing, finances/banking and environmental sustainability. Additionally, there should be representatives from the small business community Read More

Española Mayor: Strength In Unity

By JOHN RAMON VIGIL
Mayor of Española

There is an old saying, “there is strength in unity, and in unity there is progress…” Nothing can be stated that is more similar to the truth when discussing this in the aspects of our federal, state and local government systems. Most importantly these words should be valued even more so at the local government level where our citizens expect that of our local bodies of jurisdiction.

During my first two years serving as Mayor of Española, the Española City Council was evenly divided and it prevented the adoption of much needed ordinances and general consensus Read More

The Rio Grande Foundation recently hosted Corey DeAngelis for a series of events in New Mexico. DeAngelis is one of the most prominent voices for private school choice in the nation, and at events located in Albuquerque and Alamogordo, he discussed the shortcomings of government-operated educational systems and the strategic methods of the left used to gain control of America’s educational systems.

DeAngelis’ solution to our failed education system is outlined in his new book, “The Parent Revolution: Rescuing Your Kids from the Radicals Ruining Read More

Before U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez joined Sen. Martin Heinrich in asking President Joe Biden to give up his run for a second term, Vasquez had distanced himself from Biden.

Last August, Vasquez was conspicuously absent from a Biden rally in New Mexico featuring a constellation of Democrats. Vasquez said he needed to spend time with his father, the Albuquerque Journal reported. He might as well have said he needed to wash his hair. It was clear he was already thinking ahead to this year’s race and didn’t want to give Republicans any ammunition, Read More

Dannemann: Monitoring The Invasion Of Private Equity Into Healthcare

Healthcare companies should never have profit as their primary mission, don’t you think?

There’s a genuine conflict between the profit motive and what healthcare is supposed to accomplish: providing a service that heals people’s illnesses or helps them stay healthy. For a healthcare institution to be successful, profit has to be tempered with giving priority to the wellbeing of patients.

America has been struggling with this conflict for decades, because so much of our healthcare is provided by for-profit entities. Read More

Posts From The Road: Greycliff Mill In Greycliff, Montana

Orchard and Grounds: An orchard grows next to the main building a Greycliff Mill in Greycliff, Mont. As the orchard matures fruit harvested will be used in products made at the facility. The grounds are well maintained giving visitors a pleasant area to walk while taking a break from their travels. The main building on site, seen on the left, is where visitors can order a snack of baked goods and coffee bar or enjoy a lunch made with freshly grown or made ingredients including the breads. The timbers used in the building were moved from a barn dating to 1760 in upstate New York and reconstructed in Montana. Read More

Fr. Glenn: Obligation

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

One of my pet peeves—as it is for many, I would surmise—is people driving slowly (or at least relatively slowly) in the left lane, especially on the crowded interstate. We often see people mouthing words such as: “Please, sir/madam; would you be ever so kind as to move over to a lane to the right?” … or perhaps some more colorful variation thereof … waving an almost fingerless greeting as they are finally able to pass. After all, simple community vehicle operation courtesy obliges us to take other drivers into account.

Another thing that priests and ministers in particular have Read More

Rivera Family Funerals & Cremations

It has been my pleasure to work with Jack Allison of Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service, Inc. and Jennifer Reik of EGIS Complete Care, Inc. in establishing an article to regularly address questions revolving aging and wellness, and I appreciate their trust in my area of the aftercare of our deceased.

In light of the recent Beetlejuice revival, there is no “Handbook for the Recently Deceased” that I have been made aware of. However, you CAN leave a “Handbook for the Recently Deceased’s Family”. Despite our human nature for Read More
