Gubernatorial Candidate Bregman On Legislative Session

Sam Bregman

By SAM BREGMAN
Gubernatorial Candidate
New Mexico

As the Governor and Legislature prepare for New Mexico’s annual legislative session, their two priorities should be clear: protecting New Mexicans from the consequences of the Trump Administration’s policies and safeguarding the health, education, and public safety of every child and family in our state.

The Governor and Legislature took important action by passing emergency funding to address federal healthcare cuts enacted by Trump and the GOP. They also passed free universal child care, easing financial pressure on thousands

From Athens To Artificial Intelligence (AI): Thinking Revolutions Are Still Blooming In Education

By Mark MacInnes
Los Alamos

By Socrates, in the fifth century BC, engaged Athens’ young intellectuals in the agora, the public square, with provocative ‘little questions’ like: ‘What is truth?’ When questioned in this manner, some influential critics, including city leaders, were distressed by the rhetoric, which ultimately led to Socrates’s trial and execution. He died defending the principle of free inquiry into any idea, regardless of how sacred it may seem.

Plato, one of Socrates’ students, preserved some of Socrates’ dialogues not because they reached conclusions Read More

Happy New Year! After a brief respite, I’m back at my keyboard and looking forward to sharing more thoughts, ideas, and facts with you in 2026. I hope you also had the chance to recharge, reflect, and think about the year ahead—to push the reset button.

Speaking of reset buttons, isn’t that one of the reasons we make New Year’s resolutions? Most of us are familiar with the usual list. After a holiday season that often involves a little too much eating and indulgence, many people see the New Year as a chance to set short- and long- term goals. Millions Read More

Duplicate Bridge In Los Alamos: Jan. 7, 2026

BRIDGE News:

Open winners on Monday were Cliff and Michelle Rudy. Flight B winners were Allyn Pratt and Gina Doorn.

Open winners on Wednesday were Cliff Rudy and Jerry Fleming. Flight B winners were Randy Baker and Neill Goltz.

This hand asks you, particularly as North, to think out of the box and question whether a slam is possible.  Can you develop a bidding scenario that might help?

Board 19:  South is the dealer and E/W are vulnerable.

After South and West pass, North will probably open with a strong 2♣ bid. There are some these days who might open with 2NT, despite the singleton, but the strength Read More

Los Alamos Daily Post

The stocking of rainbow trout resumed this past week in Northern New Mexico. Catchable-size rainbow trout were stocked at many locations. Check in the fishing reports to see how many and when trout were stocked. If they were not stocked let week, the most recent stocking  will be included. There was some very cold weather over the weekend, Below-zero temperatures were recorded at some locations. This could help get the ice-fishing season going. Be sure to call ahead to check on ice conditions.

Small streams at higher elevations are starting Read More

Op-Ed: Present Scale Of Electrification Unprecedented

By RICK NEBEL
Los Alamos

This letter is a comment on two of the op-ed pieces that appeared in last week’s Los Alamos Daily Post: Robert Gibson’s article (link) and Paul Gessing’s article (link). Mr. Gibson pointed out that electrification is nothing new. However, the present scale of it is unprecedented. Mr. Gessing pointed this out in his article. He congratulated the governor for getting commitments to bring 3 new AI data centers to New Mexico.

The interesting part is that just 1 of those data centers consumes about 7 GW. I don’t have firm numbers on this, but the present total consumption Read More

Shin: Thank You Council Vice Chair Ryn Herrmann

By LISA SHIN
Los Alamos Family Eyecare PC

Dear Councilor Herrmann:

I am extremely grateful that you have requested a discussion about the option of creating a Metropolitan Redevelopment Area (MRA) Commission for the upcoming Jan. 13, 2026, meeting. Currently, the County Council serves as the decision making governing body having authority over the two MRAs in Los Alamos – White Rock and Los Alamos Downtown East.

As you know, I have been a strong advocate for Los Alamos following NM State Statutes governing MRAs and neighboring communities to form a citizen-led MRA Commission.

As in Counties Read More

Fr. Glenn: To See Clearly

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

These days it seems that politics obscures everything. This policy is great/evil; that politician is lionized/vilified depending on what “team” you’re on. And with social and corporate media also taking sides, it becomes much harder to know what is true and what is not—especially with AI able to fabricate any narrative. It’s perplexing that people contort (or ignore) reality when only adhering to reality can bring about best results.

One of the most subtle and dangerous spiritual and temporal temptations is not open rebellion against God or against reality, but self-deception. Read More

Posts From The Road: ‘Old Town Palestine’ In Texas

We learned that the Oxbow Bakery was named one of the best places in the state for pie by Texas Highway Magazine, a hidden gem by Texas Monthly Magazine, and was featured on the cover of Southern Living Magazine.
