Arrowsmith Presents Smart Grid Talk to Kiwanis

Department of Public Utilities Manager John Arrowsmith spoke to the Los Alamos Kiwanis Club at its lunch meeting Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Arrowsmith presented an overview of the NEDO PV Smart Grid project. Everyone wants renewable power, but the challenge is that solar is available 24 percent of the time, wind 30-40 percent of the time and hydro 30 percent of the time, he said.

It is still necessary to have traditional power sources for the times when the renewable power can’t be generated, Arrowsmith said. Read More

Art Opening Marks Proud Moment for Pinon Students

The bubbly flowed as young artists soaked in the excitement of their first art opening Friday evening at Village Arts at 216 DP Road. Hors d’oeuvre trays filled with grapes, crackers and cheese coupled with glasses of sparkling cider served by owner Ken Nebel enhanced the magical atmosphere for Pinon Elementary School students who mingled among community members, sharing the inspirations for their work. Bennett’s Donates $500 to Kiwanis

Allison and Melanie Bennett presented a $500 check Tuesday to Kiwanis President Don Casperson for Kiwanis programs that benefit children. Bennett’s Fine Jewelry and Gifts created a December fundraiser during its Holiday Open House in which for three days the store sold cake slices for $5. Hidden under the icing of each cake slice was a gemstone. Customers didn’t know if they would get a diamond, a ruby or another fine gemstone. Ruby K’s Bagel Café is about to reach a milestone and achieve a goal. The restaurant is approaching its eighth anniversary and will extend their hours.

Ruby K’s will have its “Eighth Birthday Party Celebration” Feb 22 and 23. The restaurant will serve samples of its new menu items and smoothies. 

The celebration also will include prize drawings, face painting, glitter tattoos, balloon animals and cupcake decorating.

Community Winds Concert to Light Up the Stage Saturday

Los Alamos Community Winds will celebrate light, hope and renewal in their upcoming concert, “Finlandia! and Other Brilliant Lights.”

The concert will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at Crossroads Bible Church. The concert is a benefit for the New Mexico Alzheimer’s Association.

As always, Winds concerts are free of charge. A suggested donation of $10 will be appreciated and will benefit the work of the NM Alzheimer’s Association.
