Aspen Campus Closed for Construction

LAPS News:

Construction has started on Aspen Elementary School. As of June 5, the entire campus will be closed to all public and staff.

As part of the classroom addition and main office remodel, LAPS has deemed the campus closed. This is for the safety and welfare of the public and staff and includes the entire campus, building, parking lot, soccer field and playground.

Assist the School District  in the construction process and eliminate any and all visits to Aspen Elementary until the campus is reopened in late July. Read More

Hiking Los Alamos 101 With Craig Martin at PEEC

PEEC News:

PEEC is offering Hiking Los Alamos 101. The class will meet 6-8 p.m. Mondays June 3-24.

This first session will take place in the PEEC classroom, where expert hiker Craig Martin will go over safety and comfort on the trail. He also will teach map-reading skills. After that, the group will meet at various trails for hikes.

Martin and others will be hike leaders, with interpreters from PEEC for hikes and a “last in line” person from the County Recreation Department.

Hawk-2-Hilltopper Event Friday at Urban Park

The Hawk-2-Hilltopper event for graduating 8th graders is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 31 at Urban Park, despite the fact that Los Alamos Middle School is holding its last day of school Wednesday.

The annual event includes a BBQ lunch, music, giant inflatable toys, and ends with the always hilarious shaving cream melee.

Learn Something New This Summer at UNM-LA

UNM-Los Alamos is offering two unique classes this summer. One explores Puebloan Pottery Traditions, while the other prepares students to take the exam to become an EMT I (Emergency Medical Technician I.)

Three local schools set up a Penny Wars contest to raise money for the Kiwanis/UNICEF Project Eliminate.
 
Barranca K-Kids and the Middle School Builders Club called their effort “Penny Wars” and Aspen K-Kids chose to call their fundraiser “Penny Pileup” because they did not like the connotation of war in the title.

Classes Resume Tuesday at Barranca Mesa

LAPS News:

Classes will resume at Barranca Mesa Elementary School Tuesday, May 28. 

Classes were canceled Thursday and Friday, May 22-23, due to damage sustained to the school from a fierce wind event that peeled the roof off the gymnasium and dropped it on the library and preschool playground area.

Workers have been removing debris and preparing the school for classes Tuesday.
