Battle Veteran Presents Iwo Jima Film and Talk

A video, including an interview with a local Iwo Jima Marine Corp veterans, will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.19 at Mesa Public Library, Upstairs Meeting Rooms.

Battle veteran Bill Hudson will show a video “Uncommon Valor: The Battle of Iwo Jima,” produced by the Canadian History Channel.

On this 68 anniversary of the American forces’ landing on Iwo Jima, this showing will commemorate that historic battle and all those who fought and those who were lost.

This video has not been aired  publicly on television in the United States.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is now taking applications for the 2013 NIST Summer Institute for Middle School Science Teachers, to be held July 8-19, 2013 in Gaithersburg, Md.

Children Remain Inside White Rock’s Chamisa and Pinon Schools While Police Hunt Bank Robber

 

LAPS News:

Both Chamisa Elementary School and Pinon Elementary School in White Rock will keep students in school until parents/guardians pick them up this afternoon.

“In cooperation with local police, we are following this procedure as a safety precaution as they continue their investigation of a bank robbery suspect (s) potentially in the area,” from a statement released by Los Alamos Public Schools.

Voters registered in Los Alamos County have until 7 p.m. today, Feb. 5, to cast a ballot for the 2013 Los Alamos School Board/UNM-LA Advisory Board Election.

Voting is underway at the Los Alamos Community Building at 20th Street and Central Avenue and in White Rock at Fire Station 3 on N.M. 4 just beyond Rover Boulevard.

LAHS College Signing Date Changed

LAHS News:

Los Alamos High School athlete Zak Kennison’s signing a National Letter of Intent with Colorado Mesa University, in Grand Junction, Colo., is being changed to 11:25 a.m. Friday, instead of Wednesday.

Joining Kennison will be Sean Reardon who will sign with Adams State University.

Both young men are going on to participate in Cross Country and Track.

Lecture Examines Seven LANL Explosive Fatalities

In 1954, seven workers in Los Alamos lost their lives as a result of three high explosive accidents.

It is not a well-known event. In fact, at the time, even the workers’ families were not given a lot of information.

Times have changed, however, and Cary Skidmore, a group leader for the Explosives Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory, is sharing the story with the public.

Skidmore will present “The Seven LANL Explosives Fatalities: Technical and Human Perspective,” as part of the Los Alamos Historical Society’s lecture series.

Los Alamos Athlete to Sign with Colorado Mesa University

Wednesday, Feb. 6, Los Alamos High School athlete Zak Kennison will sign a National Letter of Intent with Colorado Mesa University, in Grand Junction, Colo.

The community is invited to join Kennison in the main lobby area at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday for his signing.

Kennison will be continuing to run cross country and track for Colorado Mesa University. They are a NCAA Division II college and compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
