It is with profound sadness that I write to share the news that Darleane C. Hoffman, pioneering nuclear chemist and trailblazer for women in science, has passed away (Sept. 4, 2025) at the age of 98.

Professor Hoffman was born and raised in Iowa. She entered Iowa State College (now Iowa State University), where she first majored in applied art but later changed to chemistry, and there earned her B.S. (1948) and then her Ph.D. (1951) in physical (nuclear) chemistry.

Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) has announced that Piñon Elementary School in White Rock has been awarded a 2025 Spark Change Award.

This is the first year for these awards, launched by the Alumni of the Changemakers Fellowship as a new initiative to honor schools that demonstrate improved student outcomes can be achieved for all students.

New Mexico Offers Up To $80K In Loan Relief For Rural Veterinarians

SANTA FE – New Mexico veterinarians can now apply for up to $80,000 in student loan repayment through a new state program aimed at expanding animal care in rural communities. 

The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program, signed into law this year by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, offers debt relief to veterinarians who commit to working in underserved areas for at least four years. Applications opened Oct. 1 and will be accepted through 11:59 p.m.,” Nov. 1.
