Los Alamos Concert Association

One big change in the world of classical music performance these days is the number of artists who speak directly to the audience about the music they are about to play. Audiences love this. They enjoy having a sense of the artists as people. Even a few very brief comments from the stage can convey a feel for the performer’s personality which, in turn, can enrich the audience’s experience of the performance.

Back in the “old days”, artists Read More

Valles Caldera National Preserve Plans Prescribed Burn For Valle Grande This Spring

VCNP News:

The Valles Caldera National Preserve is looking for an opportunity to implement a prescribed burn project this spring.

The prescribed burn will target up to 1,471 acres of grass in the Valle Grande, adjacent to N.M. 4 between mile markers 39-42. Some traffic delays may occur during the ignition phases of the burn, but we do not anticipate any road closures. If conditions permit, burn operations will occur during mid-day in order minimize impacts to morning and afternoon commuter traffic on N.M. 4. The burn operations should take one to three days to complete.

French Film Gives Realistic Look At Classroom Life

Review By KELLY DOLEJSI

“The Class” (2008, rated PG-13), perhaps the only film I’ve seen starring a real-life middle-school language teacher, will screen at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Mesa Public Library.

Laurent Cantet’s award-winning drama cinematizes François Bégaudeau’s semi-autobiographical novel “Entre les murs” (“Between the walls”), which is also the film’s original title in France. Onscreen, Bégaudeau, who based his book in part on his own experiences teaching French and literature at to 13-year-olds in Paris, plays François Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘Zootopia’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“Zootopia” has been out for a month, but I finally got to see it Sunday and, boy, am I glad I did! This little gem is full of the most intricate, animated world ever created. The details in the background scenes alone are worthy of an art award!

But even more compelling is the set up for the story. Zootopia is a city in which all the animal species live in relative peace, having “evolved” from their more savage predecessors. Prey and predator live in the same city, patronizing the same businesses, aspiring to jobs and housing, mates and families. Not that there aren’t Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘Batman v. Superman’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” may have the best special effects and horrific violence the movie industry can create on screen, but I found myself yawning through it.

But most of the D.C. Comics details thrown into the film are not explained for the non-indoctrinated. More could have been done in the writing or the editing process to allow us plebes to better follow the storyline.

This dark, chaotic and violent film (my husband’s words) features two of our historically favorite D.C. Comics superheroes, Batman and Superman. Part way through the film, Wonder Read More
