This Week at the Reel Deal

Column By JIM O’DONNELL
Reel Deal Theater

This Friday our line-up will be Birdman, Penguins of Madagascar, Horrible Bosses 2 and Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 1. Interstellar will end this Thursday.

Birdman won Best Picture and Michael Keaton won Best Actor for his performance at the Gotham Independent Film Awards last evening. This film will open at the Reel Deal this Friday and probably run for one week only unless folks really come out for it in which case we could play it for two weeks. It has gotten rave reviews so we hope to see you at the theater.

Review by KELLY DOLEJSI:

Moviegoers in France, Germany, and even Seattle love “Bagdad Cafe” (1987, rated PG). This incredible and incredibly strange film has won awards across the globe for its casting, acting, and screenplay, and was chosen Best Foreign Film several times over. What will Los Alamos think? That’s always an interesting question to ask.

“Bagdad Cafe,” showing at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Mesa Public Library (upstairs meeting room), begins with a German couple on a desolate road. They are well-dressed — over-dressed Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘Intersteller’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“Interstellar” is an all-engrossing and vastly entertaining Science Fiction film, currently playing at the Reel Deal. Absorbed in it, one doesn’t notice that the film runs as long as two hours and 49 minutes. Writer/producer/director Christopher Nolan opts to keep the story in one piece, unlike many over-edited films today.

“Cooper” (whose first name is never given) is a NASA trained pilot who, after a horrific crash, becomes a farmer. He is raising two kids with the help of his late wife’s father (John Lithgow) in a dystopian future, where history is rewritten Read More
