Who doesn’t want to go on an adventure? There something thrilling and romantic about leaving the comfort and security of home in exchange for the great unknown that lies in the far corners of the map.

This is what “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” provides moviegoers – the opportunity to tag along on a great adventure.

Let me tell you, it is a wonderful ride although be prepared for long pauses on this epic journey because apparently this story is being spread out into three films.

The movie Jack Reacher delivers what I expected after seeing the trailer on TV: Action. Don’t expect too much more than that, or anything too complicated here, and there are some definite holes in the plot development.

Local Cartoonist Signing Books Dec. 17

Local cartoonist Stephen McCranie will be hosting a release party for his new book at the Los Alamos County Library 4-6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17.

The new book, Belly Flop!, is the third volume of an all-ages graphic novel series called Mal and Chad. McCranie will give a short talk and will be available afterwards to chat and sign books.

Books can be purchased for $10.

McCranie graduated from Los Alamos High School and attended the University of New Mexico. While there, he began working on a comic strip called Mal and Chad about a boy genius and his talking dog for the UNM school newspaper.
